We would like to congratulate the Minister for Better Regulation and Fair Trading, The Hon. Anoulack Chanthivong MP, for the passing of the Residential Tenancies Amendment Bill 2024, the most significant rental reforms in over a decade in the NSW Parliament. This was made possible by the collective efforts of the first NSW Rental Commissioner, Trina Jones, the Tenants' Union of NSW including Leo Patterson Ross and Jemima Mowbray for their tireless advocacy, Hon Rose Jackson MP for her continued work in the housing space, and civic society organisations like Sydney Alliance and Better Renting for making this bill what it was. Special thanks to other supportive State political representatives including Member for Newtown Jenny Leong MP, Member for Sydney Alex Greenwich MP, Member for Orange Phil Donato MP, and others. Shelter NSW was established in 1975 and is the State’s peak housing policy and advocacy body. Our vision is "A secure home for all". We provide advice on policy and legislation across the housing system, representing all its parts, working to address inequality in housing and seeking to ensure that the voices of housing consumers are included in our advocacy. Our approach is to engage, collaborate, connect and include. We work with Government, the private and not-for-profit sectors, consumers and all within our community who want to see a fairer housing system. Our work is grounded in evidence and research is central to what we do. In partnership with leading education and experts across housing, our research work adds to the collective knowledge on current and emerging issues, builds public awareness, informs solutions and strengthens our advocacy. Shelter NSW is part of a national network of organisations. A national body, National Shelter brings together all the state and territory organisations as members.

Really pleased to be here at 2024 Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) NSW State Conference here in Wollongong. The theme is “Embracing Transformation in Planning”….so topical! NSW President Sue Weatherley speaking passionately- as usual- about the importance of planners and planning to the improvement & amenity needed in our urban growth. Sue rightly warned of the need for being aware of unconscious ‘gaslighting’ of the proven planning process - in the quest for addressing the urgent housing crisis - and need for considered density as part of that. Sage. Kiersten Fishburn, Secretary NSW Department of Planning, Housing & Infrastructure, speaking now saying “housing housing housing” is what we all agree on is the problem, the solution is where we may differ, but lets keep working together to challenge together and build on tri-partite government responses. Absolutely delighted to have finally toured a great site in St Ives with the incomparable Tamar Krebs of Group Homes Australia with Shelter NSW colleague Stacey Miers. Their innovative model makes use of NSW state Group Home planning provisions, to create a resident centered small scale aged care response for homes of up to 10 people, with a focus on those experiencing dementia. 22 homes so far, 11 of which are in the Ku-ring-gai Local Government Area. Exceptional!!!

It is an important time to focus on planning with Local Government elections, TODs being driven by State, and the Federal Government looking at issues with housing, especially renters.
