ACCC worries that Qube buying MIRRAT could cut competition Australia’s competition watchdog, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, has set out a laundry list of competition worries about the proposed sale of the MIRRAT automotive terminal for AUD$$332.5m to Australian Amalgamated Terminals, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Qube (ASX:QUB). Hurricane Milton batters Florida but spares local ports; future climate disasters likely to be more intense [NOTE: this item was published on our website, a few days ago, just after the passage of Hurricane Milton]. Hurricane Milton has swept through and battered central Florida, leaving several people dead, a widespread trail of property damage, and millions without power. Milton narrowly missed the Port of Tampa Bay (on the West Coast of Florida), which was temporarily shut for a few days. Like all major commercial ports, Tampa is the centre of a trade network that stretches around the globe. Shippers and consignees may be experiencing some disruption. According to an overview of the current science by the US Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory at Princeton University, in future there will likely be fewer but more intense cyclones with more rainfall. Wide range of tech could help cut shipping’s GHG emissions, global review finds... There’s no one-size-fits-all path to shipping decarbonisation, a comprehensive impact assessment by the World Maritime University has found. Wind and solar energy could reduce the fuel energy needs, and various energy sources and storage, such as biofuels, hydrogen, methanol, ammonia, synthetic fuel oils, battery electric and even nuclear power “could cover the remaining energy needs,” the impact assessment reads. By 2030, it was predicted, all of the consulted studies predicted that the majority of shipping fuel energy in the year 2030 will be from fossil fuels. By 2040, the consensus forecast begins to greatly split, with an even greater divergence of views as to the energy mix by 2050. And the International Energy Agency produced the only scenario that led to net-zero. Governments inch toward global net-zero regulations Government delegates to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) have crept closer toward global greenhouse gas regulations aiming at cutting the carbon intensity of shipping by 40% by 2023. Governments, which are the voting members at the IMO, had identified “further areas of convergence in their positions,” the IMO reports, and have produced a draft legal text to use as a basis for ongoing talks on the “mid-term” measures (i.e. regulations), which are expected to be adopted in 2025. Massive US dockworker strike could throw global supply chains into crisis next week Australia could be hit by disruptions from a severe global supply chain crisis, which looks likely to kick-off next Tuesday (01 October 2024). Why? Well, about 65,000 wharfies in the United States will likely walk off the job on Tuesday next week on an indefinite strike. There’s a master contract that needs to be renewed and the workers and management are in dispute over wages, benefits, and, particularly, over automation. Ports on the US East and Gulf Coasts from the Canadian border down to the Mexican border could be shut down. Let no-one make any mistake here, nor let them downplay the gravity of the situation. This strike is potentially very serious for all countries that rely on the global ocean supply chain. This is not just an American problem. It is a global problem. Severe disruption may be on the way for all of us.
