Empowering people to take control of addictive behaviours via mutual-aid support groups, available online or in-person.
About us
SMART (Self Management And Recovery Training) is a free self-help, mutual-aid program that offers a place for people to in the community to get together and change problematic or addictive behaviours using evidence-based tools and techniques. There are almost 300 free SMART Recovery meetings taking place every week across Australia, each guided by a trained SMART Recovery facilitator. The SMART Recovery program is currently embedded in over 100 Government and Non Government organisations across Australia. During SMART meetings the emphasis is on people’s thinking and behaviour, rather than the substance or addiction, as well as finding practical solutions that are focused on the ‘here and now’. SMART Recovery is underpinned by only evidence-based techniques, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing, and to ensure the program adapts with scientific advances, a Research and Advisory Committee of leading Australian addiction and mental health experts was formed. The program was established in the US in 1994, has been operating in Australia for the past ten years. There are now more than 2500 weekly meetings in 18 different countries. SMART Recovery Australia provides professional training courses for individuals and AOD/Mental organisations wanting to learn the program and start new meetings within their community or as part of their organisations service. Facilitator training courses run regularly throughout the year and are open to registrations. Congratulations to our amazing National Engagement and Membership Manager Daniel Raffell who celebrates 8 years at SMART today!
National Engagement and Membership Manager. Executive Leader SMART Recovery Australia. Vice Chairman Board of Governance Silky Oaks Children's Haven
Today 8 years ago I walked through the door of a very small and rather odd shaped office in Pitt Street, Sydney for the first time. To start my journey with an organisation that I'd never heard before. With now 8 wonderful years with SMART Recovery Australia. As I reflect on this journey, I cannot help but feel a profound sense of gratitude for the experiences and connections I've made along the way. From the very beginning, being a part of this organisation has been a deeply personal and transformative experience. I have witnessed firsthand the resilience of individuals seeking change, the unwavering support of our dedicated team, and the impact we have made in the lives of many. Each success story and personal breakthrough fuels my passion for our mission and reinforces the importance of our work. Throughout these years, I have learned so much—not just about addiction recovery, but also about compassion, empathy, and the strength of community and even more about myself. I have been fortunate to collaborate with incredible colleagues and connect with amazing organisations and individuals on their recovery journeys. Together, we have fostered hope, empowered change, and spread the word about the power of Self-Management. As I look ahead, I am more committed than ever to our values and mission. There is still much work to be done, and I am excited for what the future holds for us at SMART Recovery Australia. Thank you all for being part of this remarkable journey with me. Your support and dedication inspire me every day. Here’s to many more years of making a difference together💥💥💥

It’s hard to put into words how powerful today was. After 2.5 years I got to connect in person with SMART Recovery leaders, facilitators and participants in the one room physically. Zoom profile names and pictures replaced with the sharing of practice and connection in person. Community, Connection, diversity and inclusion united us as we shared and focused on growing SMART Together. SMART has reached over 6 million people since 2017 and is delivered in 35 countries with 33% of meetings online and accessible from anywhere. Importantly SMART is available in 18 languages. A huge thank you to SMART Recovery International and everyone who made the event happen. I was so proud to share SMART Recovery Australia innovation for priority populations and sit circle with you all and acknowledge all those who have made SMART in Australia possible including Josette Freeman Looking forward to the Lisbon Addictions conference one the next few days.
