Queensland's new #industrialmanslaughter charges will be put to the test when the operators of an underground #coalmine face court later this year. Miner Graham Dawson, 60, died during a roof collapse at the Crinum mine, 60 kilometres north-east of Emerald, in September 2021. The Office of the Work Health and Safety Prosecutor (OWHSP) has charged Mastermyne Crinum Operations Pty Ltd with breaches of Queensland's Coal Mining Safety and Health Act. It has been charged with industrial manslaughter under new provisions added to the act in 2020. #ResourcesSafety and Health Queensland (RSHQ) investigated the incident and presented a brief of evidence to the OWHSP. An RSHQ spokesperson the regulator was aware that charges had since laid over Mr Dawson's death. "This is the first time a charge of industrial manslaughter has been made under #miningsafety and health legislation since it came into effect in 2020," the spokesperson said. #undergroundmine https://lnkd.in/dT5ZzjHW

Australia has one of the highest measured incidence rates of #mesothelioma in the world (Bray et al. 2017; Huang et al. 2023). Each year in Australia, between 700 and 800 people are diagnosed with the rare and aggressive #cancer. In the 2020–21 financial year, the estimated health system expenditure for mesothelioma cases was $33.7 million (total cancers $14.6 billion) (AIHW 2023a). Men are more likely to be diagnosed with mesothelioma than women across all age groups, and the number of cases diagnosed each year for both men and women has steadily increased over the past 40 years. There is no cure for mesothelioma with the main cause being exposure to #asbestos, a material that has been banned in Australia since the end of 2003 (ASEA 2016). It can take many years after being exposed to asbestos (between 20 and 60 years) for mesothelioma to develop (#CancerCouncil 2019a). This report presents the latest available statistics from the #AustralianMesotheliomaRegistry (AMR), supplemented by data from the #NationalMortalityDatabase (NMD) and the #AustralianCancerDatabase (ACD). Note that in this report, incidence data includes cases of mesothelioma notified up until 1 May 2024. This extraction date differs from previous reports. For further information see Mesothelioma in Australia 2023 – methodology paper. 617 mesothelioma cases were diagnosed in 2023 and reported to the AMR, with a median age at diagnosis of 77 685 deaths of people from mesothelioma were recorded on the AMR for 2022 – a rate of 2.0 deaths per 100,000 population Over 9 in 10 of the exposure assessment participants were assessed as having possible or probable exposure to asbestos https://lnkd.in/gH5GNPaK

Safe Work Australia has published amendments to the model Work Health and Safety (#WHS) regulations which will strengthen protections for workers at risk of exposure to #silicadust across all industries, including building and construction. The amendments provide stronger regulation of work with all materials containing at least 1% #crystallinesilica and require: -controlled processing of all crystalline silica substances -assessing the risk of work involving processing of a crystalline silica substance, and -additional duties for any processing of engineered stone that is assessed as high risk, including preparing a silica risk control plan. Changes to the WHS regulations will only take effect in a jurisdiction once implemented in the WHS laws of the jurisdiction. Check with your state or territory WHS regulator to find out how the changes will be implemented in your jurisdiction. Safe Work Australia has resources available to assist persons conducting a business or undertaking (#PCBUs) understand and comply with their obligations under the amended regulations, including: Working with crystalline silica substances: Guidance for PCBUs, and Supporting resources that summarise key concepts including what is silica dust, completing a #silicariskcontrolplan and how to control the #risks of silica dust. The guidance provides PCBUs with specific information on: their duties to #eliminate or #minimise the risks of #exposure to #respirablecrystallinesilica their duties in the #managementofrisks associated with the generation of respirable crystalline silica from processing of crystalline silica substances, and additional requirements for managing #highrisk crystalline silica processes. #silicosis https://lnkd.in/gZMPsMW3

People did this to people for money. They pay a fine however the environment, ecology and peoples' health is adversely affected for a very long period of time. 3M is a business name, why aren't the people behind bars They truly are like #Teflon ....#PTFE, best known by the brand name Teflon™, is typically made using several #hazardous #PFAS (per- and #polyfluorinatedalkyl substances) that have #polluted #drinkingwater across the globe. Nothing sticks #ethically or #morally

The factory that contaminated the world with a forever chemical This wasn’t your typical gossip around the office water cooler. As two #3M employees met over coffee at the Fortune 500 company’s sprawling corporate headquarters in Minnesota more than 40 years ago, one of them had something startling to get off his chest. A #toxicchemical in 3M’s products, one whispered, had been discovered in blood banks all over America. Two eagle-eyed scientists had spotted the man-made substance in blood samples and had come knocking on 3M’s doors in 1975, suspecting the answer lay with the Wall Street giant’s popular Scotchgard or Scotchban product lines. The scientists’ hunch was right, although the proof would take two decades to emerge. It was only in 1998 that 3M admitted to regulators the forever chemical known as #PFOS had entered the blood of people worldwide; it had gone from #contaminating heartland America to being found in the most remote corners of the globe and nearly every citizen in Australia. This masthead can reveal that in 2003 the average Australian adult had levels of PFOS in their blood at 20 times the “safe level” secretly calculated by a scientist working for 3M. The Australian government is poised to ban PFOS, which has been linked by overseas governments to a slew of adverse health effects, including suppression of the immune system, raised cholesterol, hormone disruption and certain #cancers. World-leading #healthexperts have warned Australians should be concerned at the levels of forever chemicals they have been exposed to historically and the thousands that remain in circulation in everyday household products such as cosmetics and cleaning products. Fresh revelations about how 3M is alleged to have #deceived the world about forever chemicals have emerged as a result of a mammoth lawsuit that 3M settled for $US10.3 billion ($16 billion) in the US in August. IARC classifications 1, 2b known suspected to. ..... #ethics #family #publicsafety #community #scotchguard #pfa #pfas #pfoas https://lnkd.in/g3xQ-naP
