EYES TO THE FUTURE | A new eye clinic has opened at the Sydney/Sydney Eye Hospital, catering specifically to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The Gadigal Eye Clinic includes new specialist retinal cameras that can be easily used by GPs and nurses in outreach centres. The cameras, part of a $200,000 upgrade, will make it possible for the Sydney team to diagnose and provide a treatment plan for eye issues in rural and regionally based patients. Patients treated in person at the Macquarie Street clinic will have a welcoming, culturally safe space, that honours the rich history of the Gadigal people through landscaping and art. Aboriginal people are three times more likely to suffer from a visual impairment than non-Aboriginal Australians. They are four times more likely to have a diabetic eye disease and 12 times more likely to have a blinding cataract. The new clinic is a way for SESLHD to continue to support closing the gap in Aboriginal health outcomes. The launch was attended by community members including current clients who receive ophthalmology care at the hospital, representatives of the Sydney Eye Hospital Foundation and was opened by the Minister for Health, the Hon Ryan Park MP. It’s Occupational Therapy Week, culminating in World Occupational Therapy Day on 27 October.
