An unpublished, non peer-reviewed article was released to the media last week, with headlines suggesting Australia has an overinflated rate of autism diagnosis due to financial incentives to access the NDIS. Local and international peer-reviewed data, including ours at La Trobe University, suggest otherwise. Prevalence rates were increasing prior to the introduction of the NDIS, and are strikingly consistent with international data. Australia is at the forefront of autism diagnosis and providing early and timely supports for Autistic people, ultimately improving quality of life. This should be celebrated, not demonised.
