Today, we celebrate Mercy Day, marking the anniversary of Catherine McAuley opening the very first House of Mercy on September 24, 1827. St Brigid's College is a Mercy Education school, one of thirteen across Australia which proudly carries Catherine's legacy and her vision of compassion, justice, courage, service, hospitality and respect continue to inspire us today. As a College community we celebrated Mercy Day across the final week of Term 3, beginning with our Mercy Dinner hosted by our Boarding community to our Feast Day Mass and special activities which helm the fundraising for the day where the beneficiary is Mercy Works. Happy Mercy Day to all. Caption : Photo taken of St Brigid’s Mercy Day Mass at the College Grotto

Today, we celebrate Mercy Day, marking the anniversary of Catherine McAuley opening the very first House of Mercy on September 24, 1827. This was the beginning of her incredible mission to provide shelter, education, and support to those most in need. Her vision of compassion, justice, courage, service, hospitality and respect continue to inspire us today. At Mercy Education, we proudly carry Catherine’s legacy forward across our 13 schools—nurturing students to lead with empathy, serve with purpose, and contribute to a more just world. As we reflect on this significant day, we are reminded of the lasting impact one person can make when driven by love and mercy. Let us honour this legacy by living out these values in our daily lives and in our communities. Happy Mercy Day everyone! Georgina Smith. Louisa Rennie Mercedes College. St Brigid’s has been on the road this last fortnight visiting the regions and this weekend we’ve been in Karratha, Wickham and Point Samson. Our road trips are an opportunity for our Principal, Veronica Parker and our Boarding and Enrolments team to meet with the local regional community as well as current and future SBC families. We ensure that our College community engagement reflect our Mercy Values as we light the way.

Professional Learning Days are fundamental to provide our teachers to always be on the cutting edge of the teaching, education and academic skillset. Recently, our Primary teachers at St Brigid's College participated in a professional learning workshop delivered by Knowledge Society. The 1-day workshop unpacked the Science of Learning and Cognitive Load Theory and how it is translated into high impact instructions for students from Kindergarten to Year 6. The session also emphasised the need for ‘getting reading right’, to improve student outcomes in literacy and covered the pace and fidelity of phonics, the introduction of close and critical reading as strategies to improve reading competence and the important of encouraging the use of more ambitious text.

Annually at St Brigid's College we celebrate International Women's Day with a Year 12 Breakfast at our Boarding House and a special keynote speaker is invited to share their thoughts. This year we were privileged to have Ms Bianca Pietralla GAICD, a current parent and graduate of the Class of 1997 and also the CEO of St John of God Foundation, the philanthropic arm of St John of God Health Care Ms Pietralla’s address was given from the heart and was exceptionally moving as she shared her own story of empowerment and perseverance. The day continued, with our Year 12 Leaders sharing their IWD video with all Secondary Homerooms, distributing purple ribbons to all students from Year 7 to 12 and of course, building their Gratitude Wall.... the theme of #inspiredinclusion #IWD2024 was ringing boldly and clearly through the halls of St Brigid's College.

At SBC today we were delighted to greet our new teachers and staff to the College for the very first Staff induction and orientation of 2024! Supplementing all the need to knows was also the delivery of the Faith, Story and Witness Program. During the session, staff were introduced to our Mercy story, SBC as a part of Mercy Education Limited, St Brigid’s history of almost 100 years in WA and of course the evolution of the Sisters of Mercy and its benevolent foundress Catherine McAuley. We look forward to the year together with our new and of course existing team of amazing staff lighting the way for our students in 2024. In the inspiring words of Catherine McAuley We should be shining lamps, giving light to all around us.
