  • First 5 Forever Ambassador Ashleigh Barty AO joined us on Friday in Cairns for a very special Grandparents Storytime. Through our partnership with over 325 public libraries and Indigenous Knowledge Centres across Queensland, First 5 Forever empowers families to help children thrive.    First 5 Forever creates opportunities for families and caregivers to build children’s brains and bodies through free, fun, playful experiences at their local library.   Talking, reading, singing and playing with children throughout the first five years provides a strong foundation for children’s development and wellbeing now, and for their whole life.   While brain development continues through life, and positive changes can be made at any age, the early years give us the best opportunity to create healthy foundations.   When everyone works together for the early years, all Queenslanders benefit.   A big thanks to the amazing Cairns Libraries team and all the fabulous families who came along to talk, read, sing and play with Ash. As First 5 Forever (F5F) Ambassador, I joined the team at Cairns Library this morning for a special story time to celebrate Grandparents Day. It was great to meet so many kids and their grandparents, thank you all for coming and learning about the importance of the F5F program. What a beautiful place Far North Queensland is, one of my favourite spots! #First5Forever

  • If your walls could talk, what might they say? What insights could they offer about Queensland’s social, cultural, and environmental history? And who decides how these stories are preserved? We’re considering these questions in our final Heritage talk of the year, 'Houses and Homes', on Monday 25 November. Following the talk, immerse yourself in our architectural history with a hands-on experience exploring a curated selection of original materials from State Library’s collections. This is a free event, but bookings are essential. As Book Week comes to a close, I'm proud to announce that the Ash Barty Foundation is donating 16,000 children's books to over 1,300 libraries all around Australia. I loved reading as a young girl (I still do!) so the opportunity to get more books in communities around the country was something I jumped at. We are lucky in Australia to have access to great education and libraries but it's important to continue to support these facilities to benefit everyone.
