KNOW THE RISKS WHEN BUYING MACHINERY AND EQUIPMENT | Buying machinery and equipment can mean a huge investment for a business. But, did you know that if you buy machinery or equipment from someone, they may not have the right to sell it? Just like a bank takes a mortgage over land and has the right to sell it at any time if there is a default; banks and other parties, such as equipment financiers or suppliers, can take a Registered Security Interest over personal property, and can repossess or sell it too. Misty Di-Filippo, Commercial Lawyer explains exactly what the Personal Properties Security Register (PPSR) is, and what steps you need to take before you make your next purchase - https://shorturl.at/mHsXr

NEWSFLASH: REIQ HOUSE & LAND AND CTS CONTRACT HAVE BEEN UPDATED | Whilst any contracts prepared on previous versions are still binding, it is always recommended to use the most recent updated contract to take advantage of the new terms: 📝The House & Land Contract is now 19th Edition; and 📝The CTS Contract is 15th Edition. The changes to the contracts have been minimal and have been amended to reflect changes to the Residential Tenancies and Rooming Accommodation Act 2008. That legislation was updated on 6 June to state that rent amounts cannot be increased for a residential property for 12 months, even if there is a new lease in place. For example... IMPORTANT CHANGES ANNOUNCED FOR FIRST HOME BUYERS | In a bid to help Queenslanders buy their first home, important changes were announced yesterday by the Queensland Premier, Steven Miles, to the Stamp Duty regime. Currently, first home buyers are able to purchase a home (to live in, not an investment), up to a value of $500,000 without paying stamp duty. The Premier announced this will be increased to $700,000 in the future. For vacant land this will increase from $250,000 to $350,000. This is purely a ministerial announcement at this stage and there is no set date for implementation. However we anticipate this will likely occur after the Queensland Budget receives approval. We will keep you updated as information comes to hand. For more information, read the Queensland Government media statement here: https://lnkd.in/gMkCYWQn #stampduty #firsthomebuyers #conveyancing

BACK TO SCHOOL! | Last week Katrina Peters, Director and Family Lawyer, took some time out from her busy schedule to head ‘back to school’ to chat to the next generation of legal eagles. She spoke to the Legal Studies students at Mirani State High School about the study and career options for lawyers in Mackay, as well as what life is like working in the legal industry. It was wonderful to see so many keen and dedicated students and we look forward to seeing their progress in the coming years. At Statewide, we regularly welcome both high school and university students to complete work experience with us, giving them exposure to life in a busy legal practice while they study. Many go on to work with us (full or part time) during, and upon completion of their studies, in our popular ‘Graduate Program’. For more information about opportunities at Statewide, please email us at mackay@swc.net.au #nextgeneration #legaleagles #workexperience

KNOW YOUR BOUNDARIES | Land is typically the most valuable asset we own. But how do you know where your land ends and your neighbour’s land begins? In Queensland, property boundaries are defined by survey marks that can be found at the boundary corners. Often these survey marks are white pegs in the ground. The peg often has a reference mark, such as an iron pin buried nearby or a nail to help re-establish the corner in the future. Only Registered Cadastral Surveyors with the Surveyors Board of Queensland can confirm… Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gMkb2sBM
