There are a lot of mixed emotions about this week. People are understandably upset and concerned about an uncertain future. If the global financial markets are a good proxy for predicting the flow of resources, opportunities and development, it appears as though the environment is going to be a big loser as a result of the US election. Climate change scepticism, deregulation, divestment from renewable energy and recycling, and many other indicators are a genuine risk for the future health of the planet, and the people and ecosystems that live here. It's hard to take in, and it's easy to become discouraged. Last week ago, however, I was fortunate to be a part of the 42nd Annual Tidy Towns and Sustainable Cities awards night. As host and as part of the Keep Australia Beautiful VIC team. It was a beautiful, uplifting evening. Hundreds of real people, doing real work, on the ground, in their communities. A wide range of projects, initiatives, and studies all taking place in our own backyard. People who care, from wall to wall, people who care and act. Deep commitment to one another, to being good neighbours and good stewards of the environment. The world is not the internet. To do good, it is not enough to think positive thoughts, or agree/disagree with people online. The world is outside. It's made up of people and places. Diverse people, diverse ecosystems, infinite contexts and experiences. When in doubt, go out into the world and do. Do things with others. Many of the people in the room have been 'doing', through the administration of many governments. 'Doing' through pandemics and recessions, through extreme weather events and during global conflicts. The doers tend to be more patient, because they have to be. They are more open to diversity in thought and action, because they see it work, more often than not. They're committed to moving forward, even though it's hard, because what choice do we have? Advocate for, and act on behalf of, the people and places that need our stewardship. Be better at bringing people together. Find the common ground, break bread and create positive motion, together, through 'doing'. Be inspired. Be committed. Let's go. #TidyTowns #EnvironmentalSustainability #ClimateAction #ClimateChange #Stewardship #Community #SocialImpact
