Young folk in the stormwater industry might not be aware that there was a national inquiry into stormwater back in 2015. It was an exciting time! I remember thinking that this could be the answer to all our woes to get consistency and logic into approaches to stormwater management around the country. Key recommendations of this inquiry included (paraphrased for brevity): 💡 Recommendation 1: ...to develop and implement a national policy framework for stormwater management (a National Stormwater Initiative). 💡Recommendation 4: ...consider new funding models and financial incentives that would facilitate improved stormwater management outcomes in an economically efficient way. 💡Recommendation 5: ...restore funding for stormwater research...consideration should also be given to how the overall level of research and development can be increased by attracting co-investment from other levels of government and the private sector to support and expand research activities that receive funding from the Australian Government. 📨 In 2020, Stormwater Australia sent a formal submission asking for an update on progress. https://lnkd.in/g7eDQDQP It's now 2024, can anyone share their knowledge into the likelihood of a National Stormwater Initiative or any other change coming from this inquiry? https://lnkd.in/gugmHAZ4 Stormwater Queensland, Stormwater Victoria, Stormwater NSW, Stormwater South Australia, Stormwater Western Australia, #stormwater #WaterQuality #NationalStormwaterInitiative

A not to be missed session at the Stormwater Australia national conference - SET2024 will be the presentation by Dr David McCarthy titled IoT-enabled urban water management. David is currently the Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Waterborne Pathogens: Surveillance, Prediction, and Mitigation at the University of Guelph Toronto. The background to his presentation is: IoT-enabled urban water management Real-time monitoring and control of urban water systems is an approach aimed at optimizing the management of water systems within cities. By integrating advanced technologies such as sensors, data analysis, and automation, this approach enhances the efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of our urban water services. David’s presentation will explore the potential for real time monitoring and control that can be used to help manage our water systems, especially focusing on urban stormwater. He will present examples of how real time monitoring and control can be used to protect ecosystems, deliver fit for purpose alternate water supplies, and even potentially reduce nuisance flooding. Finally, David will introduce an exciting new industry-led research centre, ARC Research Hub in the Internet of Things for Water, and discuss what the future looks like in the IoT for water space. Important information for Councils, Water Authorities, Consultants, Developers/Builders and Engineers Are you interested in learning more about SQIDEP (Stormwater Quality Improvement Device Evaluation Protocol) an independent evaluation process for verifying the performance of devices and technologies for improving stormwater quality. Our SQIDEP workshop will be held over two sessions on Tuesday 8 October at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. For convenience and to reduce travel costs for councils and other parties this workshop will be available as a virtual option and we are interested in understanding if participants would prefer that it be recorded so they can watch at a convenient time for them so please complete our survey below. The two sessions are: Part 1 - Morning Session * Discuss the background to SQIDEP. It will provide an explanation of how the field protocol was formulated, what the goals were, what the challenges were, and the lengthy process involved. Why NJCAT/NJDEP, WashDoE TAPE and other international protocols were considered and then rejected. * Describe how Councils (Water Authorities), consultants, developers/builders, and Product Suppliers benefit from SQIDEP. Why Councils, like Brisbane City, have written it into their Planning Scheme, to streamline approvals. * Outline the difference between endorsement and verification, and the SQIDEP key principles, such as independence. * Present the two different pathways for evaluation, why one might be chosen over the other, and the time, cost and data/information implications. * Step attendees through a hypothetical monitoring site, from site selection, to understanding the equipment and data requirements, the costs and the potential pitfalls. * Preparing a submission including template Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP) and Detailed Performance Report (DPR); Part 2 – Afternoon Session * Discuss the Evaluation process from an Evaluator’s perspective, including review of the Reports, data, supporting information, etc; * Present a mock Evaluator’s Workshop; * Workshop an Evaluation Report and Verification Certificate on the hypothetical site; * Talk through the Dispute resolution process, including data requirements, time, costs, etc. Presenters for this workshop will be Dr Darren Drapper, Drapper Environmental Consultants & Mr Andrew Allan, Afflux Consulting If you are interested in attending this SQIDEP Workshop then please register an expression of interest at executive@stormwater.org.au and we will provide further information or you can register directly at https://lnkd.in/eJEjxZCh #stormwater #stormwatermanagement #councils #localgovernment #sqidep #set2024 #climatechange #localgov

Have you ever wondered what the pollution looks like that is captured within stormwater treatment assets operating in urban areas within Australia? Join our FREE webinar tomorrow, 'Stormwater Pollution in the 'real world'' for an insight into what stormwater pollution actually looks like in the ‘real world’. It is the 9th session in our very popular 'Stormwater Fundamentals Series'. Register here https://lnkd.in/g4kJkzys Brad Dalrymple, Daniel Rider and Fotos Melaisis will take you on a virtual journey underground – and show you exactly what is retained within stormwater treatment assets across Australia, including gully pit inserts, gross pollutant traps, membrane filtration systems and cartridge systems. Implications for the appropriate design, construction, and management of stormwater treatment assets will also be discussed. This 45-minute session will include a presentation followed by a Q&A session with attendees. A certificate of CPD can be provided to attendees upon request.
