During our visit to London earlier this year, we were fortunate enough to visit the Monocle Headquarters at Midori House, to sit down for a conversation with Design Editor Nic Monisse for the Architecture Special of Monocle On Design radio. It was an absolute pleasure to discuss Sydney’s architectural legacy, our commitment to adapting places that are already special, and the responsibility that we have as architects and designers to think more and build less. Thank you for having us, and in such great company with the legendary John Pawson also featured on the August 20 episode. Tune in to hear more: https://lnkd.in/gTXEJQmT

Next week I’m joining Laura Cockburn, Alex Small and Cate Cowlishaw for the Australian Institute of Architects Women in Architecture event discussing Business, Balance and Burnout. Our industry has a reputation for being fast-paced and demanding, and it’s important to reflect on how we can build and sustain successful practices alongside supporting the well-being of our colleagues, our employees and ourselves.

Engaging in conversation with our wonderful clients is an integral part to our day-to-day work, so we were absolutely thrilled when Architecture Media invited us to do so on the ‘Our Houses’ stage as part of their epic Design Speaks program. Alongside Paul Hotston of Phorm Architecture, we’ll be discussing Studio Prineas’ recently completed Pettit and Sevitt revival ‘New Line House’ with our client. Our conversation will explore the various life chapters of the home and share insights about designing spaces that celebrate past memories while making way for the future. New Line House is the revival of an iconic Pettit and Sevitt home – one of thoughtful interventions that balance restoration, additions and landscape. We are looking forward to sharing more at Our Houses at the Tongue & Groove showroom in Brisbane on September 5th. Tickets are on sale now via https://lnkd.in/ginZfkYg https://lnkd.in/gyYsNwPf

38th Dulux Colour Awards 2024 It was wonderful to gather at Bennelong Point on Gadigal Land during Reconciliation week to celebrate Australian & New Zealand Design Excellence and exceptional and innovative use of colour in our built environment. Eva-Marie had the privilege to be a juror for the 38th Dulux Colour Awards 2024 alongside Monique Woodward, Shaun Carter, Dr Sarosh Mulla, Nick Travers and Andrea Lucena-Orr. Congratulations to all finalists and winners and thank-you to Dulux - Commercial & Residential for a great evening and for your support of Australian Architecture and Design. Eva-Marie Prineas on Australian Grand Prix winning project 'Alexandria House' by Lachlan Seegers Architect " To say the success of this project comes down to a singular gesture may deny the skill involved, but it truly is one colour applied in one context that defines this clear winner. The secret sauce is in the combination of that specific colour, namely Dulux Cumberland Red – a deep burnished hue, and its application to the ceiling of the home that is in itself brave, clever and, maybe most importantly, precedent setting. Undoubtedly, part of the impact of this painted ceiling is the way it stands out in stark contrast to the Dulux Natural WhiteTM walls. The consequence of this juxtaposition is that the roof plane articulates and defines the spatial relationships, and the effect cannot be understated. It’s like reading the floor plan, only from above. As an architectural move it is so simple, yet it alters the experience within the interior dramatically, highlighting its geometry, during the day at least; at night, the dark ceiling disappears as though there is none there at all. Although minimal, there is a warmth in these spaces, enhanced by earthy hues, pigments and aggregates, which combine to satisfy the architects’ goal to create soulful depth through a play of shadows and illumination. Ultimately, it is a ‘catwalk project’ – a creative architectural exemplar that instills confidence to try new things. "

Alpha House in ELLE Decoration UK Another highlight from April was seeing our Alpha House project grace the cover of ELLE Decoration UK. Such a thrill to be able to see this featured on local newsstands during our recent travels! It was a pleasure to speak with Victoria Woodcock about the project, a 1930s cottage that we were able to thoughtfully extend into a contemporary family home: “Every part of the design was closely considered, including the environmental impact of its renovation. As much of the original build as possible was retained — including a garage reimagined as a pool house — while solar panels were added and water tanks placed in the garden. Increasingly, this mindset (and the studio’s recent B-Corporation status) is as appealing to clients as the studio’s part-Zen-minimalist, part-beach-cool aesthetic.” A big thank you to Anson Smart and Claire Delmar for helping us to capture this project so beautifully!

New Line House in Monocle Our recent trip to London included a visit to Monocle’s HQ, Midori House, where we were lucky enough to catch our latest project, New Line House featured in the magazine’s April issue. This project was a real labour of love for our team, being able to bring a new lease of life to a loved family home and honour the legacy of this original Petit + Sevitt design. The story by Nic Monisse captures so many of the special moments found within and features beautiful photography snapped by Clinton Weaver. You can read more about the project here: https://lnkd.in/grQYzcU7
