Together, Coles Group and Sundrop Farms went in search for tomatoes full of flavour that reminded them of the ones they ate as kids. For Steve Marafiote’s, CEO of Sundrop Farms, one of his fondest memories is picking tomatoes with his grandma in her garden. “She’d wear an apron and bunch it up at the front like a sack to collect the tomatoes,” says Steve. “Then she would cut them into thick slices, drizzle them with olive oil, and add a bit of salt and oregano.” It’s memories like Steve’s that led Sundrop Farms and Coles on this tomato hunt. Their search spanned 28,000km, several countries and 8 different seed companies. “It took us on quite a journey – we tried more than 120 tomatoes,” says Charlotte Gilbert, General Manager of Fresh Produce at Coles. “It was like we were on a treasure hunt for the holy grail of tomatoes,” Steve explains. “We wanted a really pronounced flavour, and a great balance of acidity and sweetness.” Steve and Charlotte believe the tomatoes they found are going to redefine what tomatoes taste like in Australia. “As soon as we tried them, we knew we had to bring them home,” Charlotte says of the tomatoes in the range. “The black one is quite acidic with a bit of a punch. Meet Marie Piccone, Managing Director of Manbulloo Ltd Farms, who supplies sweet, golden mangoes from northern Australia to Coles. The seven farms across Katherine, NT, and Townsville in Queensland produce top-quality mangoes due to the climate. “The soil type gives them the colour, and all the sunshine gives them their wonderful flavour,” Marie says. Marie is passionate about the mangoes she grows for Australians. “All we want is for people to have a smile on their face when they eat our mangoes, and to be really disappointed when they get to the end!” She laughs.
