  • Drowning affects thousands of lives every year, including those who live with the consequences of non-fatal drowning or having attempted a rescue. We are saddened to share that the National Drowning Report 2024 shows that: 🔵 323 people drowned in Australian waterways 🔵 26% of drownings were at beaches and 25% at rivers 🔵 28% were aged 65 years and over 🔵 Between the ages of 10 and 20 drowning rates increase tenfold 🔵 83 people who drowned were born overseas This report is a reminder that water safety and drowning prevention starts at home, in schools and at local swimming pools. By strengthening communities swimming and water safety skills, we can ensure everyone is able to enjoy the water safely. • The National Drowning Report 2024, released today at Parliament House, Canberra, found there were 323 drowning deaths over the past 12 months, which is a 16% increase on the 10-year average. Whilst progress has been made in some areas, drowning numbers remain persistent. This report highlights the importance of providing universal access to swimming lessons and lifesaving skills. It also illustrates the necessity of ensuring lifesaving services are present at the places and times where people are choosing to swim. The Hon Anika Wells MP said the Australian Government was committed to supporting organisations like Royal Life Saving – Australia and Surf Life Saving Australia to raise water safety awareness, ahead of summer. “With some simple precautions we can all enjoy the water safely. Always supervise children around water, learn swimming, water safety and lifesaving skills, wear a lifejacket when boating, and always swim between the red and yellow flags,” Find out more: https://lnkd.in/guH-Y7aA #DrowningPrevention #WaterSafety #NationalDrowningReport2024
