Updates

  • 1 June 2024 marks the 60th anniversary of St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne opening Australia's first clinic for the care of people with alcohol problems and the study of alcohol use disorder (previously called ‘alcoholism’).    Now under the leadership of Professor Yvonne Bonomo, as part of SVHM’s Addiction Medicine Unit, the clinic strives to make it easier for people to get treatment for addiction and to break down barriers to accessing treatment.     “Our care is centred around the individual, so from the moment the come in we aim to make them feel welcome, feel no judgement or stigma, and understand that that we are really happy to see them,” said Professor Bonomo.    “We address both the physical and mental health problems they experience, all of which is very important in this area of healthcare.”    To read more about the team, visit our Newsroom: https://lnkd.in/ggsM2UdZ

  • Meet Stephanie Vu, a Senior Prosthetist at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, who exemplifies innovation and compassion in healthcare. Stephanie, who leads a team of prosthetists, helps amputees regain their lives and independence. “I ended up in prosthetics because I was interested in working in healthcare and helping people, but I also have a very creative side,” Stephanie explained. “Working in prosthetists allows me to do both – I can help people and, at the same time, use my hands and my creativity in the workshop.” Many amputees require life-long care, says Stephanie. “Our relationships are very important, and it’s extremely rewarding to help people live their lives to the fullest.” #stvincents #betterandfairercare #always

  • Allied Health makes up our third largest workforce here at St Vincent’s. From ICU to community-based services, allied health professionals have an important role to play in the physical and mental recovery of patients right across our network. This year's theme for Allied Health Professional’s Day - ‘Stronger together’ - highlights the benefits of multidisciplinary team-based, collaborative care. Thomas Slezak, Physiotherapist at St Vincent’s Sydney, sees the impact of this every day through his work. “Working at St Vincent’s, I get to care for patients alongside some of the most competent professionals in the country,” Thomas says. “In my role, I work closely with doctors, nurses, occupational therapists and pharmacists daily. I love that we can treat our patients through a truly holistic, multi-disciplinary approach.” From our physiotherapists, dieticians and clinical psychologists and counsellors to our speech pathologists, occupational therapists, and medical radiation practitioners - thank you for your hard work and dedication in caring for people of all ages. #stvincents #betterandfairercare #always #AHPsDay2024

  • Today is World Hospice and Palliative Care Day. Our team at Caritas Christi Kew are committed to the delivery of best practice palliative care, enabling patients to enhance their quality of life and achieve their individual goals. Contemporary palliative care is not only for people at the end of their life, but for those living with a chronic life-limiting illness. At Caritas, our team of nurses, medical staff, allied health, receptionists and volunteers work together to provide holistic care to support the patient and their caregivers physical, emotional and spiritual needs. “Palliative care fosters a compassionate environment that respects individual values and preferences,” Nurse Unit Manager Angela Baird said. “Our interdisciplinary team uses a patient-centred approach to maximise quality of life and to minimise symptoms."

  • Today on Emergency Nurses Day, we recognise the commitment and compassion that our emergency nurses bring every single day across our hospitals. Day and night, all year round, our emergency nurses provide crucial care to those who need it most. Olivia Bollington, Emergency Nurse at St Vincent’s Melbourne, has worked at our Emergency Department for 20 years. She is now the coordinator of the Melbourne ED’s Mental Health, Alcohol and Other Drugs Hub. “We have a strong mission to provide equitable care, that seeps into everything we do,” says Olivia. “We see people from all walks of life, and we make sure that they are all treated with the same level of respect. Every person gets the opportunity to speak to a nurse, a doctor, a mental health specialists or allied health professional. We listen to the patients and involve them in their care.” A huge thank you to our incredible Emergency Nurses! #stvincents #betterandfairercare #always #emergencynursesday

  • It’s Breast Cancer Awareness month. Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in women worldwide and close to one million women are screened annually through the national BreastScreen Australia program.  St Vincent’s is playing a key role in a collaborative research project investigating the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to read mammograms. The study has found that AI can help improve breast screening outcomes.  “AI is not ready for standalone performance but when used in conjunction with human readers it did help improve cancer detection and reduce unnecessary recalls,” said Associate Professor Helen Frazer, the Project Lead and Clinical Director of St Vincent’s Breastscreen.  Recently published in Nature Communications, the BRAIx study uses Australian AI capability developed by a team of clinicians, data scientists and engineers from St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, St Vincent’s Institute of Medical Research, BreastScreen Victoria, the University of Melbourne and the Australian Institute for Machine Learning (AIML) at the University of Adelaide. • The reach of St Vincent’s specialised care has never been limited to just our hospitals. From the Murrimbidgee to the Far North of Australia, our teams are ever expanding into the areas that need our care most. Alice Springs recently became the nation’s hub for gastroenterology and liver education - led by Professor Benedict Devereaux of St Vincent’s Northside in Brisbane, with Professor Alex Thompson of St Vincent’s Melbourne - for the Gastroenterological Society of Australia (GESA) Regional, Remote and Indigenous Network. “The program came about because of the challenges that our colleagues have in regional and remote centers to interact and engage with colleagues. If we can contribute in a collaborative sense to education programs that are relevant to regional centers, that will improve quality of care,” Professor Devereaux says. This initiative is part of a five-year partnership with NT Health, aiming to optimise gastrointestinal and liver health across the Northern Territory. Professor Devereaux envisions expanding this model to benefit more regional, remote and Indigenous populations throughout Australia. #stvincents #betterandfairercare #always
