THE LATEST EDITION OF THE FLYING HIGHER MAGAZINE IS HERE We mention this almost every edition, but if there’s one document we encourage Old Boys to read to stay up-to-date with everything going on in the High community, it’s the Flying Higher magazine. This is a bumper edition covering academic and co-curricular achievements at the school, as well as a range of developments within our alumni community. You can read the full edition at the link here https://lnkd.in/gXhbruD2 #SHOBS #VeritateetVirtute

Calling Old Boys from the High Classes of 1991 & 1992! The GPS Gold Challenge is coming up very soon on Friday 11th and Saturday 12th October. If you’re from the High class of 1991 or 1992 and would like to take part, please email communications@shsobu.org.au and we will connect you with the High team organisers (led by Dan Chesterman and Ben Whitaker). For those not familiar with the GPS Gold Challenge, it is an event held every 1-2 years for GPS Old Boys who have just turned 50 or are about to do so. Old Boys from all of the schools compete against one another in a number of activities followed by a large group dinner at the end. It’s a great weekend to reconnect with your classmates and those from the other schools and is ultimately more about the social aspect than the competition! The activities across the two days are Rowing (Leichhardt Rowing Club), Golf (Strathfield GC) & Rifle Shooting (King’s) on Friday morning, then on Saturday at Newington there is Touch Rugby, Football/Soccer (a new addition for 2024), Cricket, Basketball, Tennis, Short and Long Distance Running, Rifle Shooting & Swimming followed by the dinner & debating in the evening. “It’s in reality a reunion”, said GPS Gold Challenge Founder David Hutchinson (Shore ’67). “The event aims to rekindle the friendships among former classmates while sharing in the spirit of friendly competition and accordingly, the sports chosen, as well as the schedule for the day and evening, are set up to encourage participation in a wide number of activities regardless of physical fitness or ability”, he said. “Previous years have proven that the greater the number of participants, the more enjoyment for all. It is absolutely not the intention to just roll out the 1st grade teams from 30 years ago. Everyone is welcome, including spectators”. #SHOBS #VeritateetVirtute

Reunions are the key conduit that bind our Old Boys network together. As such we encourage all Old Boys to consider attending theirs. In fact in the last ten years we’ve never had an Old Boy contact us saying that they wish they had not attended their reunion, yet we’ve had many emails and calls about Old Boys who regret not going or who were disappointed to not have known their reunion was on. So please help to spread the word and if you’re 50/50 on attending yours we encourage you to make the effort - we can guarantee you won’t regret it! On that note, please find below a list of the upcoming High reunions and events for the remainder of the year: Class of 1961 - 63 Reunion: 4th November Class of 1964 - 60 Year Reunion: 15th November Class of 1974 - 50 Year Reunion: 2nd November Class of 1979 - 45 year Reunion: 23rd November Class of 1984 - 40 Year Reunion: 21st September Class of 1989 - 35 Year Reunion: 30th November Class of 1991 & 1992 - GPS Gold Challenge: 11th & 12th October Class of 1994 - 30 Year Reunion: 2nd November Class of 1999 - 25 Year Reunion: 7th September Class of 2014 - 10 Year Reunion: 9th November Class of 2019 - 5 Year Reunion: 8th November Old Boys vs The School Basketball Matches - 8th September Foundation Day Assembly: 15th October More information for each reunion can be found at the link below. As always, in some of the photos we use the Prefects for each year as the full year photo is not always available. If you are planning a reunion for 2024, that is not listed above, please contact the OBU (communications@shsobu.org.au) so we can assist. Also if you are holding a reunion in 2025, it’s never too early to start planning, so please reach out to the OBU to assist. https://lnkd.in/dgYWAwdr #SHOBS #VeritateetVirtute

We receive quite a number of questions from Old Boys regarding the school and what’s changed since their time. The best way to learn about the current school and whether it is right for your child, is to attend the yearly Open Day. The Sydney Boys High School Open Day 2024 will be held this year from 9:30am to 12:00pm on Thursday 12 September 2024, at the school. Note that positions are limited and rsvps are essential. To rsvp, please follow the link here sbhs.co/openday. Please also feel free to share the details of the open day to any other friends and family who might be interested in learning more about High. #SHOBS #VeritateetVirtute

The High First Grade Volleyball team will compete for the GPS premiership this Saturday against Scots at 10:00am (not 10:30am) at the High gym. We encourage Old Boy ex-volleyball players and parents to come down and support the boys in their final match of the season. Sydney High School has an extraordinary record in GPS Volleyball with High winning the first grade premiership in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022 & 2023. They were also Co-Premiers with Sydney Grammar in 2007, 2013 & 2014. There has been similar success also in the GPS second grade premiership. The program has been driven by long-serving coach and MIC of Volleyball, Mr Michael Kay, after whom the GPS First Grade Shield is named, along with a number of Old Boys who have come back to coach at the school over the last twenty years. #SHOBS #VeritateetVirtute
