SYO is the pathway for young musicians to Connect, Create and Champion orchestral music.

About us

Sydney Youth Orchestras (SYO) is widely acknowledged as NSW's premier orchestral training organisation, comprising 15 ensembles of over 640 young musicians aged 6 to 25. As a strong community organisation, SYO nurtures and develops Australia's musicians of the future, making a real difference to the lives of young musicians and the people they reach within the community. SYO's strength lies in the delivery of a high-quality and comprehensive orchestral training program, with the aim of presenting a range of accessible, interactive, and engaging performances throughout the year. The organization performs regularly for the public in Sydney's best venues, as well as in major community events such as Carols in the Domain, Toddlers' Proms, and outreach programs, including concerts and workshops in regional NSW. SYO also performs regularly at corporate events. In 2023, SYO celebrated its 50th anniversary, marking five decades of nurturing young musical talent in Australia. To commemorate this milestone occasion, SYO has planned an exciting lineup of concerts, masterclasses, and special events throughout the year. These celebrations will culminate in a gala concert featuring SYO alumni, showcasing the incredible talents of the orchestra's past and present members. In 2024 as a premier orchestral training organisation, SYO continues to make a significant impact on the lives of young musicians and the communities they serve. By providing high-quality training and performance opportunities, SYO is nurturing the next generation of Australia's leading musicians, and enriching the cultural fabric of our society.

Our CEO Mia Patoulios had a very special day, yesterday, at the Bicentenary celebrations of the NSW Government Legislative Council and to hearing an address from King Charles. Thank you @Ben Franklin for not only inviting Mia but for showcasing our young musicians in the lead up to the event with Lunchtime concerts. We love bringing music to the halls of Parliament House and can't wait to do so again in the future!

Each year, Thrive Community Grants provide smaller charities with one-off grants of up to $50,000 to assist children and young people to connect with community, participate in activities that build resilience, develop new skills, enrich lives, and create a sense of belonging. Sydney Youth Orchestras are thrilled to announce that we are one of the recipients of St.George Foundation's Thrive Community Grants for a Project with Willcannia Central School, borne out of our collaboration in 2023 on our Big West Tour, and our continued bespoke collaboration for 2026, as we work on new song writing, musician development with students in Wilcannia, their teachers and to the broader community in Broken Hill and the Far West as we meet local musicians and community bands in our 2025 Big Sky Tour, sharing a love of music, new skills and connections that echo across our state and beyond. If you missed our #SYO orchestras doing their thing in Pitt Street Mall on Saturday for SYO Big Busk 2024 you missed a treat! Our biggest annual fundraising event consists of all of our orchestras performing all over the CBD connecting Sydneysiders and beyond, through the power of music, whilst battling it out with peer-to-peer fundraising for the ultimate orchestra prize… the revered Ice Cream Party - the winner of that prize - that one of our youngest orchestras won. Stage One Pink, are mighty fundraisers! It's not too late to donate to The Big Busk and ensure SYO can continue to deliver amazing musicians support and opportunities to come together and bring joy to not just PItt Street Mall, but generations to come. We couldnt do it without an incredible host of volunteers, parents and our musicians, as well as our sponsors Create NSW, Learning For Good - Australia, Market City Shopping Centre and Fresh Tees Here's a snippet of the afternoon and some things we overheard! #SYO love big crazy ideas, and the team make them work. This one's rolling back around this year, and you can expect to 660 kids performing across Parramatta and the Sydney CBD and Parramatta, each orchestra performs at multiple sites and also does a live stream slot. Last year I barely left the Livestream Studio - but this year I am hoping to range a little, even of only to Dixon Street or Market City. Put Saturday September 28th in your diary and come and hear the sound of the future as they sweep across Sydney, hauling their instruments with them.

A heartfelt thankyou from Sydney Youth Orchestras What an incredible night we had at the 2024 SYO LIVE at 50 Martin Place! We were thrilled to bring together great music, delicious food, and premium beverages—all within the stunning surrounds of Level 10 at Macquarie Group's historic 50 Martin Place headquarters. This special evening was dedicated to celebrating and supporting the Regional Engagement of Sydney Youth Orchestras, helping us raise essential funds to continue our programs. We were honoured to showcase our amazing musicians, who were joined by the immensely talented Aimee Volkofsky, a multi-talented singer-songwriter, and storyteller from Wilyakali and Barkindji Country. We were also privileged to have Benjamin Northey, Chief Conductor of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor – Learning and Engagement of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, as our special guest. The Macquarie Group Choir, along with Macquarie Staff and Alumni, also delivered a memorable performance. A huge thank you to everyone who joined us, including our generous sponsors Angullong Wines, Broken Hill Distillery Gin, and Garage Roasters Coffee, and to all those who pledged donations your support means the world to us and ensures that SYO continues to thrive and inspire.
