About us

System 2 was created in 2022 by the Behavioural Insights Team and Nesta. Together, we aim to transform the lives of millions of people by designing, testing and scaling solutions to society’s biggest challenges. We tackle complex social issues by combining systems thinking and behavioural science, collaborating deeply with individuals with lived experience. Our relationship with BIT and our sister charity Nesta, give System 2 access to a deep pool of international expertise and the latest evidence on what does and does not work. We combine this global reach and track record, with a strong focus on local partnerships and amplifying the perspectives of under-represented groups. Our Centre for Behavioural and System Change undertakes research aligned to our mission, guided by an experienced Research Committee. We seek to contribute to evidence based public policy discussion and reform, whilst committing to publicising our research to inform and encourage public debate. We believe that charities can enhance their impact by applying a behavioural lens to the design and implementation of their activities. We work with them in a variety of ways, from supporting them to improve their internal capabilities to managing projects that design, test and evaluate possible changes to their interventions. The System 2 name pays homage to the seminal work of Nobel Prize Winner, Professor Daniel Kahneman. His book 'Thinking Fast and Slow' popularised the idea of 'System 2' as the deliberate, reflective part of the brain. Our launch mission is to enable young people experiencing disadvantage to thrive.

    Still buzzing from our launch event last week. Thank you to those who joined us in person or online for your interest in our work, and to the Paul Ramsay Foundation for kindly hosting us at Yirranma Place. After a Welcome to Country, our Executive Officer, John Craven, set out why System 2 were set up and how our approach combining behavioural science and systems thinking could help accelerate progress on some of society's most challenging issues. Our Program Officer, Prathesa Selvaraj, explained why we believe deep collaboration with those with lived experience is so important, with a video from our partners at YLab showcasing our recent work together. Ben Gales, Chief Impact Officer at PRF, highlighted our recent project, Reimagining the Employment Services System. The Chair of our Research Committee, Robyn Mildon, then outlined the future plans for our Centre for Behavioural and System Change now it has received Approved Research Institute and DGR status - before introducing the other Research Committee members - Alex Gyani, Amanda Third, Jenny Donovan, Jesse King, Nick Biddle and Robert Slonim.     System 2 is thrilled to announce that we are now an Approved Research Institute (ARI) with Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status. Our recently established Centre for Behavioural and System Change conducts research in support of our mission, overseen by our distinguished Research Committee. Robyn Mildon, Chair of the Research Committee, commented "I am delighted that System 2 has been endorsed as an ARI. Our research seeks to tackle complex social issues by combining systems thinking and behavioural science, collaborating deeply with individuals with lived experience. The Research Committee looks forward to supporting System 2 in its mission to enable young people experiencing disadvantage to thrive" John Craven, Executive Officer of System 2, added "Having recently completed our inaugural project, everyone at System 2 is excited about the opportunity to collaborate across the sector to drive systemic change. Our approach involves applying findings from behavioural science to develop and test evidence-based solutions that create better alignment between behaviours and the contexts within which they are performed. This can include redesigning elements of a system to better capitalise on behavioural enablers and minimise behavioural barriers so that systems better serve their users. Such system redesign can help to increase the uptake of adaptive but uncommon behaviours or to create more favourable consequences for behaviours that are already common.
