You're invited to join us for a unique birdwatching experience on South Bruny Island on the 30 November or 1 December! Due to the success of this event over the last two years, we are once again partnering with Inala Nature Tours to offer our supporters the opportunity to participate in a discounted birdwatching and property tour of the 607-hectare Inala Conservation Reserve. Walk with one of Inala’s specialist nature and conservation guides around the reserve, which is home to all 12 Tasmanian endemic birds and one of the first properties to join the Land for Wildlife Program in Tasmania. Romy, Duncan and Bieran at Nietta are dedicated to looking after wildlife within their farm and it is a pleasure to welcome them to the Land for Wildlife program. They have been working on revegetating areas of their property and have fenced off bushland from stock to prevent overgrazing. Romy has even designed their own wallaby-proof fences with wombat gates under them. Each gate weighs at least 3kg - heavy enough to stop wallabies but tough wombats can push through. The gates are under, not in, the fence, so they don't reduce the tension of the fence (which can lead to wildlife getting tangled). If a wombat has mange, they set a cap of treatment miticide in the gate, which pours onto the back of the wombat, treating it without any need to disturb the wombat. For Romy's design details, email our Land for Wildlife coordinator Anna at apovey@tasland.org.au #ecosystem #conservation #greatoutdoors #ecology #tasmania #nature #natureconservation #landforwildlife #keeptassiewild #discovertasmania #bushliving #community #wildlifeconservation #farmlife

This wedgie was spotted soaring above our Tinderbox Hills Reserve by local photographer Evan Draayers. Evan has been visiting our reserve frequently to photograph the abundant birdlife found there. Tinderbox Hills is nestled amongst suburbia and bush blocks that spread south from Hobart. It is an important refuge for fauna of all kinds as there are very few patches of nature left intact as the suburbs advance. Being able to establish a conservation reserve in this area was a rare and invaluable opportunity. We are excited to report that we've had a successful ecological burn at our Rubicon Sanctuary. Many of you will already know about the delicate balance of life at this property and how burning enables TLC to maintain the natural ecological values of the property. Our main aim for this burn was to enhance the diversity of native species in particular the fire respondent nationally vulnerable Cassinia rugata, wrinkled dollybush, and the nationally critically endangered Prasophyllum pulchellum, pretty leek orchid. The area is also a proposed recipient site for Cassinia rugata seedlings from the area burnt in autumn 2023 to establish a broader representation of this species across Rubicon Sanctuary. #ecology #nature #biodiversity #environment #conservation #discovertasmania #tasmania #natureconservation #ecosystems #ecosystem #team #ecologicalrestoration #protection #fieldwork #science #naturalecosystems Photos by Elise Jeffery

Oh to be a paddling platypus looking for its next snack. This friendly fellow was spotted by our Land for Wildlife Coordinator Phil Wise, on his own property which is (of course!) a part of our Land for Wildlife program! Platypus are frequent visitors to Phil's dam, with a nearby creek making up their habitat. Platypus often move across land, with Tasmania's lack of natural predators meaning it was even more likely to be witnessed on the island. #keeptassiewild #bushliving #natureconservation #ecosystem #landforwildlife #ecology #wildlifeconservation #tasmania #biodiversity #nature #greatoutdoors #conservation #discovertasmania #environment #ecosystems #team #naturelovers #bushwalking #garden #gardenlife #dreamhouse #dreamhome

It is our great pleasure to announce that after an extensive and thorough recruitment process led by the Tasmanian Land Conservancy (TLC) Board, we have appointed Dr Katherine Tuft as our next CEO. Kath is a conservation scientist with fifteen years experience integrating land management and applied research in the Australian environmental NGO sector. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in conservation from across Australia and we are thrilled to have her joining TLC after eight years as Chief Executive of Arid Recovery. Kath will commence in late January 2025 and work closely with outgoing CEO, James Hattam for the first two months to facilitate a transition period. As Kath put it: “I am honoured to be taking on the responsibility of stewarding the Tasmanian Land Conservancy as CEO. TLC has a well-deserved reputation as a mature and effective organisation with a big heart for nature and people. I very much look forward to working with the TLC's team, and many loyal partners and supporters. I would also like to express my sincere thanks to James Hattam and the TLC Board for their commitment to a smooth transition.” Please join us in giving Kath a big TLC welcome.

We’re wrapping up the Midlands revegetation project with a field day on Milford on Friday next week, 1st of November. Working in conjunction with TAS Farm Innovation Hub this event is a unique opportunity to visit Milford, a 1,875 hectare mixed farming enterprise in the Northern Midlands. During the paddock walk you'll have the opportunity to see three native vegetation sites, discuss different approaches to manage revegetation of farms, and explore biodiversity monitoring, utilising the project developed invertebrate habitat assessment tool. Tickets are available via the TAS Farm Innovation Hub event page: https://lnkd.in/gqa78QgZ

The new owners of one of TLC's Revolving Fund properties, perched on a Turrakana/Tasman Peninsula mountain top near Roaring Beach, are about the start building their dream home. You may recognise it as the Mt Communication property sold in 2019. The new owners, Kristan and Summer have fittingly renamed it 'Saltwood', and have meticulously designed their home to respect the landscape and the property's conservation covenant. Did you see our staff in The Weeping Tree at screenings earlier this year? If you didn't you are in luck, it is now available to watch via Australian Geographic Youtube channel. In the final chapter, you will hear from TLC's Ecologist Aimee Bliss and Reserve Manager Grant Houniet, as they explore the Five Rivers Reserve and tend to cider gums that have endured wildfires. We have two new Land for Wildlife members, Keith and Megan Darke, who are very keen on planting trees, having grown and planted hundreds on their property at Flowery Gully. One of the most important factors for success is keeping browsing wildlife at bay - tall guards are essential (900-1200mm high). Megan and Keith find home-made galvanised netting guards the most effective and worth the effort as they can be used again. Use mesh with 1.4mm wire (strong) and 40mm holes (stops rabbits) and one strong stake. The typical corflute guards catch wind badly, but a technique to stabilise them is to put a short stake across the corner opposite the main stake. Keith and Megan would love to chat with other Land for Wildlife or Gardens for Wildlife members who are interested in revegetation. Contact our Land for Wildlife Coordinator, Anna, to get in touch with them at apovey@tasland.org.au Welcome to the Land for Wildlife community Keith and Megan! #ecosystem #conservation #landforwildlife #wildlifeconservation #farmlife #community #natureconservation #ecology #nature #discovertasmania #tasmania #keeptassiewild #bushliving #greatoutdoors #ecologicalrestoration #protection #biodiversity #regeneration #Revegetation #fieldwork
