Today is International Tenants Day 2024, and we’re excited to launch ‘Going to VCAT’, a comprehensive video guide to help renters in Victoria confidently navigate the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. From applying to VCAT to preparing for hearings and understanding the final order, this resource offers step-by-step guidance to make the process more accessible for all renters. We encourage organisations supporting renters to share this video within your networks and help spread the word. A big thank you to studio kettle for their creativity and collaboration on this important project. Together, we’ve created a valuable resource to empower renters across Victoria. This week, the Wyndham Humanitarian Network (WHN), in which we are actively involved, organised a Renters' Rights session for local migrant communities. The session, run by Tenants Victoria, Unison, and WEstjustice, welcomed over 50 newly arrived migrants residing in Wyndham LGA with ties to the Southeast Asian and African communities. Tenants Victoria tenancy lawyer Agata N. (pictured) informed renters about key issues, and with interpreters on hand, everyone was able to fully participate. People raised questions about urgent repairs, the VCAT process, compensation, subletting and rent increases. To provide ongoing support, we also distributed printed resources, including materials in community languages. Being part of this valuable network allows us to help renters more confidently navigate their rights as new migrants to Victoria 💪 #HousingIsAHumanRight #RenterRights #RentingVictoria Wyndham Community and Education Centre

It was a highlight for us this week to host a Renting and Disaster Justice Day that brought together stakeholders from the community legal sector to focus attention on the convergence between renting and disaster preparedness. The event, spearheaded by lawyer Tim Koerner, highlighted the urgent need to bolster support systems for renters confronting increased challenges during disasters. The day was filled with insightful discussion, shared expertise and, of course, networking when we broke for a communal Persian lunch catered by the social enterprise, SalamaTea. Thanks to all the people who attended the event at our city offices. They literally came from all over Victoria – including one participant from Wodonga, over 300km away. Thank you to Victoria Legal Aid for funding this event.
