The power of the arts in creating truly inclusive spaces was on full display this weekend at Brisbane Powerhouse. 🎧💃 Through The A List’s Create Space Arts Initiative, we transformed the iconic Brisbane Powerhouse Museum into an autism-friendly space where 164 neurodivergent people and their families could dance, connect, and simply BE 🩷 This wasn’t just an event—it was a testament to what happens when arts and accessibility come together in meaningful ways. 🙌🏼Together with our partner, Aspect Autism Friendly, the team is incredibly proud of the 27 Brisbane Powerhouse staff we trained to make this event inclusive, alongside our 6 neurodivergent volunteers who brought their lived experience and leadership to the day. The impact speaks for itself: ✅ 119 attendees felt supported ✅ 152 said inclusion made the event better for their family ✅ 160 felt a true sense of belonging ✅ Everyone wants more events like this! 💙 Some of the feedback: "Normally, we have to leave events when it gets too much for our daughter. Here, she had space to choose what she liked—we stayed for hours!" “What an incredible event, so many different activities, we felt so included” ⭐A huge thank you to our partners Brisbane Powerhouse & Aspect Australia—together, we are setting a new standard for what truly inclusive arts experiences can look like. Thank you too, to Department of Social Services (DSS) for funding this project and to our two A List co-founders Nicole Gamerov FCA and 🪢Bianca Shapiro, for continuing to champion the rights of autistic people and their access to the arts. 🤗Join us for more events at MCA on 15th March, Sydney Dance Company on 6th April, or Melbourne Comedy Festival on 10th April—because inclusion in the arts is just getting started. #CreateSpace #TheAList #NeurodiversityInTheArts #InclusionMatters #BrisbanePowerhouse #AspectAustralia

The A List Create Space Arts Initiative moves to the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia on March 15th for a full drop in day of drawing from 10:00am until 4:00pm. Collaboratively designed with artists from the MCA, AuDHD Project Director Madeleine Jaine Lobsey and the Autistic Arts Advisory Board including Rebecca Street, Emma Tomlinson and Stephen Hunter. Starting with a giant community chalk drawing and moving all the way up the levels of the MCA, the whole community will be able to make their mark on the museum. Creating drawings to build a box city, exploring how to work with giant chalk or watching artists draw on the glass, walls and lifts of the museum. This event has seen the staff at the MCA participate in autism friendly training from the Aspect Autism Friendly team, environmental assesments and reports, training in current practices with visual stories implemented and thorough planning inside universal accessible design practices. Six young neurodivergent artists have participated in art making workshops and leaderhsip training with professional staff and will be co-facilitating the event. None of this would be possible without the funding from The Australian Government Department of Social Services (DSS) grant for The A List team, MyCareSpace Team, Vikki Barrack , or the hard work from multiple departments of the MCA. EVERYONE is welcome as we 'take over the museum' for a day and rediscover a passion that started very young for most of us.... DRAWING! A big focus of The A List Create Space Arts Initiative is the legacy of leaving arts and culture venues autism friendly and neuroinclusive. In partnership with Aspect Autism Friendly we are conducting environmental audits, delivering extensive feedback to arts venues, creating visual stories and resources and training staff. Over the past few weeks we have worked with Museum of Contemporary Art Australia , Brisbane Powerhouse , Museums Victoria and Melbourne International Comedy Festival . By the end of February we will have completed this work with Sydney Dance Company too . These are exciting times. We cannot wait for the public to attend the events we have created and for the future being embedded in these venues. We as the Founders of MyCareSpace and The A List are so proud to be leading the way for the disability community in our Create Space Arts Initiative, funded by Australian Government Department of Social Services (DSS) in partnership with Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect). Over the weekend we had our Create History Event at the Anzac Memorial where the whole community participated in our autism friendly event. The staff at the Anzac Memorial were trained by the Aspect Autism Friendly team, the content was designed and delivered by our Autistic Arts Advisory Board and the event was led by autistic volunteer lead facilitators that participated in our free training program. We were delighted to see the community so engaged with the Dhinawan yarn entertainment welcome ceremony, national anthem sung by Autism Queensland Limited ambassador Emma Tomlinson, get their hands on historial objects and hundreds of kilograms of LEGO. A highlight was the performances by the Anzac Memorial Staff from real letters, diary entries and a play by Morris Gleitzman. We are looking forward to connecting with more autistic young adults in our free volunteer training program, venues across NSW, VIC and QLD and giving autistic artists opportunities to create content.
