Today on World Scleroderma Day, we're highlighting the unique challenges faced by men with scleroderma, a chronic autoimmune disease that causes skin and connective tissue to harden. It can also affect internal organs, leading to serious health issues. While women make up the majority of scleroderma cases, men account for 20-30% in Australia. This underscores the need for greater awareness and targeted support for male patients. Men are typically diagnosed with scleroderma later, around ages 40-50, compared to women who often receive their diagnosis in their 30s. This delay can lead to challenges in starting treatment promptly. Men often experience more severe disease progression than women, particularly with involvement of organs like the lungs and heart. This makes managing scleroderma more difficult for male patients. Diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis (dcSSc), which involves widespread skin thickening and severe complications, is more common in men. In contrast, women tend to have limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis (lcSSc), which generally has a better prognosis. Understanding these gender differences is crucial for improving outcomes through targeted research and support initiatives. Massage and low-level laser therapy can complement scleroderma treatment. Contact MT Trent Renshaw at Coffs Coast Sports Physiotherapy to explore how these therapies can support you. Let's show our support for everyone affected by scleroderma, especially the men battling this tough condition. #WSD2024 #WorldSclerodermaDay #SclerodermaAwareness #SclerodermaInMen #SclerodermaSupport Scleroderma Australia #SclerodermaNSW

Meet "Balanced Ben" – The 7th Good Health Hero. Balanced Ben demonstrates how incorporating massage therapy into life leads to a well-rounded, healthy lifestyle, reflecting the principles of the original six health heroes. Physical Activity: Like #PhysicalPhil, Ben knows that regular physical activity is crucial for health. Massage therapy complements physical exercise by aiding muscle recovery, improving flexibility, and preventing injuries. Balanced Nutrition: #NourishedNick's focus on a healthy diet is also echoed by Ben. Good nutrition supports the body's healing processes, which are enhanced by regular massage therapy. Social Connections: Connecting with others is essential, as #ConnectedKai shows. Ben advocates for massage as a form of human touch that reduces stress and promotes emotional wellbeing, fostering a sense of connection and care. Adequate Rest: #RestedRohan highlights the importance of sleep. Massage therapy can improve sleep quality by reducing tension and promoting relaxation. Mental Health Awareness: Like #SwitchedonSam, Ben is aware of the impact of mental health on overall wellbeing. Massage therapy can alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression by triggering the release of endorphins. Health Education: #EducatedEnzo stresses the importance of staying informed. Ben encourages regular learning about body mechanics, the benefits of different massage techniques, and the importance of self-care practices. Ben's Motto: "Balance is the Key to Wellbeing" #goodhealthheroes #healthhero #menshealthweek #menshealthweek2024 #menshealth #massagetherapy #selfcare #balancedben Healthy Male Western Sydney University

#MelanomaAwarenessMonth may be over, but the fight against skin cancer continues. Today marks the first week of Beard Season, coinciding with #WorldBicycleDay. To kick things off, here’s a throwback to Trent Renshaw on this day in 2018, #cycling with a #beard as an 'in your face' reminder to #GetASkinCheck. In Australia, blokes are twice as likely to die from skin cancer as women. That’s why we’re donating 10% of every bloke massage between 1st June and 31st August to Skin Check Champions. 🌞🧴🔎🏁 Studies show that non-dermatologist professionals, such as barbers and massage therapists, identify about 10-15% of suspicious lesions. Their regular interactions with clients provide crucial opportunities for early skin cancer detection and referrals to dermatologists for further evaluation. Do yourself a favour — #GetAMassage and help raise funds and awareness to save Aussies from skin cancer. #earlydetection #massage #menshealth #beardseason #skincheck #skincancer #melanoma #throwback #2018 #avalonbeach #sydney

Yesterday marked World Ankylosing Spondylitis Day, a day to raise awareness about this often misunderstood and invisible illness. Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory condition primarily affecting the spine and sacroiliac joints, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced flexibility. In Australia, over 2.7 million people suffer from various forms of arthritis, with AS representing a significant portion of cases, typically emerging in early adulthood between ages 17 and 45, with men outnumbering women in diagnoses at a ratio of 3:1. Morning stiffness is a common symptom of AS, improving with movement throughout the day. Tailored exercises such as swimming and yoga, along with manual therapies like massage, can alleviate stiffness and inflammation. Organisations like Arthritis Australia, the Australian Rheumatology Association, and Musculoskeletal Australia provide vital support networks for those navigating AS challenges. If you're seeking relief from AS, consider reaching out to EP Todd Browne and MT Trent Renshaw at Coffs Coast Sports Physiotherapy. Their specialised expertise enables them to tailor exercise programs and manual therapy techniques to alleviate AS symptoms and improve quality of life. Whether you're managing pain, enhancing mobility, or optimising function, Todd and Trent are committed to supporting you on your AS journey. #WorldASDay2024 #AnkylosingSpondylitis #ArthritisAwareness #ChronicPain #RheumatoidArthritis #AxialSpondyloarthritis #axSpA #InvisibleIllness #MensHealth

As Testicular Cancer Awareness Month draws to a close, it's crucial to reflect on the impact of this disease. Did you know Australia has one of the highest rates of testicular cancer in the world? It's the most prevalent cancer among Australian men aged 20-39, with approximately 850 diagnoses annually. In the fight against testicular cancer, it's essential to understand the journey of survivors. Up to 1 in 5 Australian men diagnosed with testicular cancer will typically require radiation therapy as part of their treatment. Additionally, an estimated 1 in 10 will go on to develop genital lymphoedema, a condition that can significantly impact quality of life. At Coffs Coast Sports Physiotherapy, I'm proud to be part of a team that provides specialised care for individuals facing lymphoedema challenges. As an Australasian Lymphology Association accredited lymphoedema practitioner, my focus lies in addressing conditions like genital lymphoedema, employing a range of Complex Lymphoedema Therapy (CLT) modalities such as manual lymphatic drainage, compression therapy, exercise, and skin care. Let's keep the conversation going, encourage regular self-exams, and support organisations like Movember, Cancer Council NSW and Cancer Australia working tirelessly to raise awareness and provide resources. #TesticularCancerAwarenessMonth #TesticularCancer #KnowTheFacts #KnowThyNuts #Lymphoedema #MensHealth
