Literacy is Freedom

About us

The Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation (ALNF), established in 1999, is a national charity assisting people in our most marginalised communities to gain vital language, literacy and communication skills. ALNF’s specialised and innovative programs address the needs of a diverse range of individuals and communities – specifically supporting First Nations, refugee and other vulnerable Australians. ALNF believes that literacy is freedom- literacy allows individuals to access education, participate meaningfully in our society and to have a voice. It is a basic human right. We see a world where everyone, wherever they come from, however they identify, can confidently express themselves, engage with society and share their stories, embracing the extraordinary opportunities life brings.

  • 🌟 What an incredible result! 🌟  It’s been another huge year for the Literacy is Freedom Appeal in partnership with Officeworks! We want to extend our thanks to everyone who joined us throughout the month of September. From those who generously donated or purchased a tote, to all Officeworks team members across 171 stores nationwide who passionately supported our mission. Together, we’ve raised an outstanding $624,500! These funds will support over 1,300 children in marginalised communities across Australia to develop essential language and literacy skills. Together, we are helping kids across Australia write their own bright futures. Thank you for making this possible! 🙌 📚 #LiteracyIsFreedom

  • What an incredible session at SXSW Sydney this week! A huge thanks to all who joined us. Our very own Eric Brace, Professor Tom Calma AO and Glenise Coulthard AM shared insights into the International Decade of Indigenous Languages, data sovereignty, and the deep connection between identity, Country and Language. As Glenise said, “Language gives voice to the landscape, our Ancestors, and our way of seeing the world.” The session also highlighted how, in the hands of community, ALNF’s digital tools go far beyond just documentation. They bring Language to life, encourage collaboration and truly celebrate culture and relationships. Thank you SXSW Sydney for the opportunity to speak about something we are so passionate about, and to Adrian Phoon for his warm introduction! #sxswsydney #literacyisfreedom

Great session yesterday at SXSW Sydney. Professor Tom Calma AO and Glenise Coulthard AM treated the audience with clear insights on topics ranging from the International Decade on Indigenous Languages; data sovereignty and governance; the inextricable link between Land and Language; and the very practical matter of equipping Indigenous communities with the (digital) tools and training to collaborate, document, celebrate, share and teach Languages (and literacy) within communities across Australia. Glenise shared excellent examples from the many Language camps held on Adnyamathanha country and in her consultation with communities far and wide. Tom offered insights from both his national and international experiences over many contexts and years. In Glenise's words, "we need to keep our First Nations Language strong and thriving. Language gives voices to the landscapes, our Ancestors and ways of seeing and interpreting the world. When the Language of the land is spoken, it brings together all of the elements of the landscape and its people. Language encompasses the relationships of these people with one another and with the landscape, past, present and future." In the hands of community, digitisation is much more than documentation. It is a space to navigate (often daily) the knowledges, culture and relationships embedded within the words, phrases, and stories. It involves engagement between the generations and on country. These are some of the things we have learned through the journey of the Living First Language Platform. Language is about relationships and digital tools should be seen within the context of relationships. Thank you, SXSW Sydney, for providing the opportunity for Tom and Glenise to generously share their experiences and insights at the Sydney Conference. We are also greatly appreciative of the deeply engaged audience for our session. Amazing! Thanks also to Adrian Phoon for the warm introduction and the excellent summation of points from the Talk. #sxswsydney #literacyisfreedom #idil #SXSWonLinkedIn The Australian Literacy & Numeracy Foundation
