Literacy is Freedom
About us
The Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation (ALNF), established in 1999, is a national charity assisting people in our most marginalised communities to gain vital language, literacy and communication skills. ALNF’s specialised and innovative programs address the needs of a diverse range of individuals and communities – specifically supporting First Nations, refugee and other vulnerable Australians. ALNF believes that literacy is freedom- literacy allows individuals to access education, participate meaningfully in our society and to have a voice. It is a basic human right. We see a world where everyone, wherever they come from, however they identify, can confidently express themselves, engage with society and share their stories, embracing the extraordinary opportunities life brings.

Today is National Close the Gap Day, calling on all of us to work together to improve life outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and communities. Strong literacy, in both English and Indigenous First Language, is a key piece of this mission, flowing on to touch every aspect of a community and a life. Health, wellbeing, safety, success, employment and independence are all connected to literacy and education. Now more than ever, the work needs to continue to champion educational equality and help shape a fairer education system for all. #CloseTheGap #literacyisfreedom

Many hands make literacy work! Our friends at Haleon have donated over 300 beautiful and inspiring children’s books to our Share-A-Book program, amplifying our mission to get more quality books to children and families across some of our most marginalised communities. Thank you for bringing joy to children and helping them on their journey to becoming readers and leaders. We can’t wait to send these out! #BuildingBrighterFutures #ShareABook #haleonanz

"We value the work of ALNF. Our school officers feel valued when they are offered your training. I notice that they are energised and confident when returning to the class with new knowledge. We are also very appreciative of the resources and books you donate to our children. We highly value reading and these books allow us to surround our children in written language." - ALNF Early Language & Literacy course participant, Palm Island.
