Thanks Bradley Williams of The Becoming Collective for hosting yesterday's OT week extravaganza, an online celebration of what occupational therapy is and can be. Thanks to Nicole de la Perrelle and Bronwyn Paynter for sharing enthusiastically on the panel, and Angela Berndt for trying valiantly to contribute despite tech challenges! Here are some of my takeaways: Occupational Therapists are everyday heroes: our means and ends - occupation - is so ordinary (hence accessible) and yet so powerful - lives can be transformed through meaningful doing. We need to remember who are we serving and how are we serving them, and hold onto our whole practice process. We’re not limited in the conditions or body parts we’re interested in or the modalities we can use (cause "occupation" is huge!). There is potential to broaden our impact if we hold onto the vision to see OT in places we haven’t seen before - supporting wellbeing outside of traditional health and disability services.

  • "With all due respect, I won't be changing the word 'occupation' because it's our domain of concern" How do you feel as you read that quote? These were the wise words from Gail Whiteford when she visited our community. She shared a story about an OT who changed their practice in a forensic setting and stood strong when questioned. How? Because she imagined all of us OTs behind her. And she had a solid foundation of process and models as a base. This is why things like the OT Extravaganza and The Becoming Collective exist. So that you have that felt support as well as confidence and clarity so that we can stay true to our profession. -------- There still time to join the OT Extravaganza happening on October 22nd. • 📣 OT Extravaganza Panel Announcement: Nicole de la Perrelle 🥳 Ever since I first chatted with Nicole, I have enjoyed her questioning of my thinking and gentle challenging to either help me communicate more clearly or think a little differently (and I hope that it has gone the other way too). Nicole is an inaugural member of The Becoming Collective and someone who is passionate about nudging the profession towards better. I've enjoyed and appreciate her encouragement and support personally, within the community and in her business. Nicole is an experienced OT and OT Mentor with a passion for helping OTs to build their skills, grow their knowledge and become confident in their practice without burning out. She has worked in many different sectors across her working life. Currently she divides her time across clinical work (driving and neuro-focussed), teaching at Flinders University in the Neuro-rehab post-graduate program and supporting occupational therapist through mentoring and online programs (where she has taken particular interest in burn out). -------------------------- Join The Becoming Collective for an extraordinary gathering of passionate Occupational Therapists from around the world! • 📣 OT Extravaganza Panel Announcement: Angela Berndt 🥳 Angela is currently in the both exciting and no doubt challenging position of creating a brand OT new course at the University of Tasmania, the first for the state. I'll share a little bio about Ange further below, but the reason I reached out to her is because of her influence on my own journey. Ange was a tutor during my degree at University of South Australia and whilst I enjoyed my degree overall, I was really influenced by Ange and the Participatory Community Practice subjects. They really opened my eyes to how OT can be practiced and it's potential to influence the world. I've no doubt they are embedded within the make up of The Becoming Collective. I am so excited to have Ange on the panel to hear her ideas, reflections and excitement about the future of the profession. Here is a little more on Angela's work: Angela became an Occupational Therapist to work in mental health, and achieved that with her first role out of Uni. That first job was in an environment where all OT services were grounded in occupation, modelled by a fierce boss. From that solid foundation, Angela has had a career spanning mental health, aged care, primary health projects, driver assessment and rehabilitation, teaching, research, governance and leadership. At the core, she remains passionate about occupation as both a therapeutic means and end, and its inherent connection to our health and wellbeing. -------------------------- Join The Becoming Collective for an extraordinary gathering of passionate Occupational Therapists from around the world!
