  • Social cohesion—the degree of connectedness and solidarity between groups in society—is essential for building strong, resilient communities. 📖 For more on how we can collectively strengthen our communities, check out the Scanlon Foundation’s Social Cohesion report—a valuable resource on building connected, supportive communities across Australia (link in Maria Tchan's post below). It was great to attend the Strengthening Social Cohesion Conference on Dharug land this week. Thanks to Western Sydney University for organising! The highlight was the panel discussion on social cohesion and democratic resilience with leaders Professor Susan Moylan-Coombs, Anthea Hancocks, Professor Kevin Dunn, and Yamamah Agha. Key takeaway: fostering a resilient, inclusive society requires both community-led initiatives and evidence-based policies. A fantastic reminder of the collaborative effort needed to build connections that withstand societal challenges. For those interested, here's the Scanlon Foundation’s Social Cohesion report https://lnkd.in/gw54VxNn Highly recommend reading it for a comprehensive view on the state of social cohesion in Australia. It is not all dire! #SocialCohesion #DemocraticResilience #CommunityBuilding

Love that Victorian Health Promotion Foundation (VicHealth) is advocating and creating opportunities through partners for women to move their bodies. Research shows that moving your body is a gamechanger for #mental and #physicalhealth, but we also know that for women's participation there are barriers in balancing family, work, home and financial barriers in fees for sporting services. To address this Victorian Health Promotion Foundation (VicHealth) is running #ThisGirlCanWeek 2024 from Sunday 10 November to Sunday 17 November. It’s an opportunity for women to try out new forms of movement, from stand-up paddle boarding to active playgroups, in a welcoming, safe, inclusive environments. The best part is – all the activities are free or low-cost. #togetherweareunstoppable Please share widely! You can head to the website to find an activity near you: https://lnkd.in/g_Rkaj_R

For me, R U OK? Day is a reminder that behind a smile there’s sometimes struggle. If you’re going to check in with someone today, tomorrow or any day, make sure you have time and care up your sleeve. Someone saying ‘no I’m not OK’ is a gift - they’re trusting you to hear their pain and help them through. And given life throws many curve balls, one day, any day, that could be you. Thanks to Nic for sharing his journey to inspire others to start life-changing conversations 💛 R U OK? #ruokanyday

CONTENT WARNING: This post mentions suicide. "Chris was the life of the party, charming, confident and effortlessly cool. But he was struggling a lot more than he was letting on." Nic was 16 when his older brother Chris took his life. Being so close in age, he often looked up to him and they shared a close bond. Nic's grief journey has been difficult, but he believes talking has helped. "Any kind of death, and particularly suicide, impacts so many people. Everyone experiences grief in different ways. What was helpful for me was being able to speak about Chris when I felt I wanted to, but not to be pressured when I didn't want to." Nic now dedicates his life to sharing his own personal mental health challenges, as well as his family's story, to encourage young people to check in with one another and reach out for support. "A student wrote to me on social media after one of my talks and said that they were suicidal and in a really dark place. Hearing my story got them on the path to seeking support, and two years later they wrote to me again, telling me how much it had helped them." "Speaking to young people isn’t just a job for me, it really feels like I'm meant to be doing this. It’s a calling." We're sharing Nic's story today, on World Suicide Prevention Day, to remind people of the power of connection and meaningful conversations. Read Nic's story: https://lnkd.in/geRG3drB #WSPD2024

It was a treat to share the stage with Anna Brown OAM, Simon Oats, Patrick Churnside & Scott Rankin and chat about “Storytelling for Impact” at the Future Generation Exchange Event yesterday🎤📚 We explored how combining stories and 'hard data' creates powerful impact reporting. This work we did with QLife and LGBTIQ+ Health Australia is a great example of storytelling for impact on the ground. https://lnkd.in/gMQSTQ_w Big shout out to the orgs we spent time with yesterday and who are doing amazing work in the youth mental health prevention space.
