The IQ Club is excited to launch MADE IN. A series of stories featuring ‘High IQ’ businesses identified by The IQ Club member network as models of excellence. These examples provide invaluable business insights and important learnings for our members. In Episode 1 in our series, Dianne Semmens (Acacia Consulting Services) presents Boomaroo Nurseries and the CEO Peter Smith, MAICD. Peter’s passion is encouraging businesses to innovate in the Geelong region and sees the high standards set within Australia as the reason to be Australian Made. About Boomaroo Nurseries Boomaroo cultivates 300 million seedlings a year for the wholesale vegetable and fresh produce market, and employ 150 staff (including agronomists, auditors, technicians, territory managers and support staff) across two sites in Lara (VIC) and Southbrook (QLD) with a total area of 180,000 sqm. Innovation Automation is a core operational focus. Plants can be automatically sown and dispatched with the touch of a button and clients can receive the crop, delivered by Boomaroo’s own fleet of trucks, planting the crop within a matter of hours. If planting conditions are not optimal for the client (due to weather conditions) Boomaroo can delay delivery until planting conditions improve. Quality control The Southbrook site is an “entirely no touch” system using rolling benches to transport plants and customised software to ensure consistency, efficiency and reliability when cultivating a premium-quality commercial seedling product. The Lara site will be upgraded from its gantry-based system soon. Cost reduction The Southbrook system ensures a greater tolerance in crop uniformity, higher yields and reduced production costs with less waste and where densely packed tray cells need less water, nutrients and applied inputs.
