Since 1994, the The Wilderness Society Australia has been celebrating the best new fiction, non-fiction and picture books written for children that promote a love of nature. We couldn’t be prouder to announce that we have won the Karajia and Environment Award for Children’s Literature in the Fiction Category. Our beautiful book, ‘The Littlest Penguin’ co-published by the Penguin Foundation, Penguin Random House Australia & New Zealand and illustrated by the incredibly talented Jedda Robaard, was developed in close collaboration with the marine scientists and conservation team at Phillip Island Nature Parks – with sincere thanks to Peter Dann AM, Jessica McKelson, Paula Wasiak, Andre Chiaradia and Georgia Symmons. Penguin Foundation Board Chair, Simone Clancy, congratulates all award winners and those closely involved in the publication of the Littlest Penguin: “Jedda Robaard’s illustrations delight and capture readers’ attention to highlight one of our key objectives - to educate young readers about the wondrous little penguins of Millowl, Phillip Island. It’s our hope that the book will inspire the next generation to be strong advocates for nature and preservation of our wild places”. Sales of the book directly contribute to research and conservation work and you can support these vital efforts by purchasing a copy as a gift or for yourself from all good bookstores or online from Penguin Random House Australia & New Zealand. #wildernesssociety #karajia #littlepenguins #naturebooks #phillipisland #millowl

National Threatened Species Day on 7 September raises awareness of plants and animals at risk of extinction. In the lead up to this day, we are pleased to share the latest Threatened Species Report 2023 from Phillip Island Nature Parks. Phillip Island (Millowl) is a rich haven for threatened species. This outstanding report proudly produced by Jessica McKelson and her dedicated team outlines the collaborative efforts made towards strengthening threatened flora and fauna species. Happy World Seabird Day 🐧 🌊 Dressed in white and keeping my clothes clean for once! Following biosecurity practices on a #bts visit at Werribee Veterinary School with Jasmin Hufschmid and Rosie Stott. We are excited to collaborate with University of Melbourne on a little penguin passive disease research project. The project is a result of the recommendations provided in the Disease Risk Analysis for Little Penguins 🐧. Today was all about strengthening partnerships and witnessing where all the wildlife health research will be conducted. How fantastic it was to have great minds all come together and look at future possibilities that could help our wild penguin🐧 and seabird populations. We are looking forward to implementing this 3-year passive disease little penguin health research project for Phillip Island Nature Parks. The results and findings will help us further understand future health risks to our colony. A huge shout out to The Penguin Foundation for generously funding this important work. 🐧🙌🏼 #seabirds #penguins #worldseabirdday #partnerships
