Lived Experience Australia ,in partnership with many universities, is seeking to explore the factors affecting both consumers who have been on community treatment orders (CTO) and carers who have supported people on CTOs in Australia. The research study, voluntary and anonymous, aims to understand why and how this treatment varies, and to reduce coercive actions by mental health services. 📢 This week, 55 of our member organisations issued a joint call on governments to increase funding to sustain their crucial services. DANA CEO Jeff Smith has warned that the continued lack of additional investment by governments in the advocacy sector will have severe implications for people with disability. “The Disability Royal Commission (DRC) and the NDIS Review both highlighted the vital role of independent disability advocacy in their final reports, and the need to increase funding to meet demand,” said Mr Smith. At a time when people with disability need advocacy support to navigate these new changes, many independent disability advocacy organisations are at crisis point themselves. Our consultations with member organisations around Australia have found that: ➡️ 85% will have less capacity to support people with disability over the next 12 months. ➡️ The vast majority have long waitlists, with many closing their books. ➡️ 93% are considering staff cuts or have already reduced hours or made staff redundant ahead of this new financial year. ➡️ Small organisations, rural and remote organisations, and organisations that only receive funding from their State or Territory government are particularly under threat. We are calling on the Federal Government to act now to ensure that people with disability can continue to access the advocacy they need during this time of reform.
