About us
For more than 25 years, the YMCA of Whittlesea has been dedicated to strengthening people and the community. Today we are building on our experience, reinvesting in our people and programs, and researching and launching new initiatives to strengthen our impact in the community in which we work and live. Over the last year we have embarked on a strategic planning process to chart our course for the next five years. We are committed to working with and for the community and have sought input from the community, partners, youth, our members, program participants and staff and volunteers. Together we will continue to go from strength to strength to engage and develop our community – and share the YMCA’s vision. VISION YMCA Whittlesea is committed to connecting and engaging communities through the provision of programs and services that promote an active and engaged lifestyle. We strive to make a positive difference by providing each and every person the opportunity to be healthy, happy and connected. MISSION The YMCAs of Australia work together, from a base of Christian values, to provide opportunities for all people to grow in body, mind and spirit. We believe in the power of inspired young people!

What an inspiring week for the Y’s Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) services! 🎉 Recently, we witnessed the energy, creativity, and passion of young innovators at the 2024 Business Innovation Challenge, hosted by the University of Melbourne. 🎓 Our incredible judges – Michele Rowse, Craig Mathieson, Shona Casey-Eland, and Jarrod Dobson – were truly impressed by the bold ideas shared by these talented teams. 💡 As Michele put it, "At the Y, we believe in the power of inspired young people, and this event was a shining example of that belief in action." 🌟 We can’t wait to see how their innovative ideas could help shape the future of our 240+ OSHC services across Australia, helping us provide even more fun, engaging, and educational experiences for children and families. 🧒📚 Practera #InspiredYoungPeople #TheY #OSHC #Innovation #YouthEmpowerment #Education #AfterSchoolCare #FutureLeaders #SupportingFamilies #YAustralia
Do you know who invented Basketball? The Y (YMCA)! What is also not widely known is that The Y offers Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) across Australia. This week we ran a Business Innovation Challenge over 2 days in partnership with University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Business and Economics (FBE) to help The Y tackle their challenge of being recognised nationally for delivering OSHC. Fueled by an introduction to the challenge by our Y representatives Michele Rowse and Craig Mathieson, 10 teams worked tirelessly to develop a solution, taking on all of our suggestions, the clients feedback and occasionally humouring me by playing Simon Says. All teams should be commended for their solution and the pitch they created for The Y. In the end it came down to two teams: The One and Skool. Both teams had amazing ideas to share but The One came through as our challenge winners. Congratulations to: David Bakshi, Khaleel Lalji, Nishant Sahoo, Sara Veronesi, Stacy Su and Yuchu Hu. A very big thank you to Michele Rowse and Craig Mathieson for giving your time so generously over the two days, briefing students, providing feedback and judging the final pitches. Thank you also to The Y judges Shona Casey-Eland and Jarrod Dobson who gave incredible feedback when judging our final pitches. Thank you to Nicola Corner and her team for providing this incredible event for University of Melbourne FBE students and for helping us navigate these events on campus. Thank you also to Divyang Sorathiya for your tireless assistance over the two days. It would not have been possible without you there! Thank you to everyone who attended and gave their all! "Social media has been a great tool for me but it is also damaging." Layne talks about experiencing stigma through social media, and how more education around the best terms and phrases to use is the best way forward to a more inclusive, accepting society. Recently some of our students Hazel, Jacinta, Zane and Jett visited Parliament House and met with Bronwyn Halfpenny MP, State Member for Thomastown and Deputy Premier and Education Minister Ben Carroll. The students observed question time and then had the opportunity to share with the Ministers their previous education experience in a mainstream school and how being at Y Community School has helped them reengage with learning. The students did a brilliant job in speaking and sharing their thoughts.

Recent discussions across Australian media outlets about youth education have highlighted significant developments in alternative schooling options and creating flexible, inclusive spaces aimed at improving engagement for young people. Our newly built Y Community School, was designed by experienced education professionals and in collaboration with students and teachers from the Y’s Queensland Schools program. Taking into consideration a flexible school environment, these spaces provide a more adaptable and supportive learning environment, allowing students to stay connected and collaborate with their peers whilst receiving the individualised support they need. 🛡️ Intersectionality: Young People Leading the Way In Child Protection Week, we’re focusing on how every child deserves a fair go, no matter who they are or where they come from. Intersectionality helps us understand the unique challenges faced by children from diverse backgrounds, and young leaders are at the forefront of this movement. 💡 How can we make a difference? ✔️Listen to young voices. ✔️Learn about how different identities impact children’s lives. ✔️Act to create inclusive protection strategies. Let’s work together to ensure no child is left behind. 🌍 #ChildProtectionWeek #Intersectionality #YouthLeadership #InclusiveProtection #EveryChildMatters #CommunityResponsibility

🛡️ Every child deserves a safe, supportive environment—and it’s up to all of us to make that happen. 🛡️ Child protection isn’t just the responsibility of parents or caregivers—it’s a collective effort. From teachers to neighbors, friends to local businesses, we all play a role in ensuring that every child in our community is safe and supported. 🗣️ How can you contribute? ▪️ Speak Up: If you see something concerning, don’t stay silent. Every voice matters in protecting our children. ▪️ Create Safe Spaces: Whether it's at home, in schools, or in community centers, prioritize environments where children feel secure and valued. ▪️ Support Families: Offer a helping hand to parents and caregivers in your community. Sometimes, even small gestures can make a big difference. ▪️ Educate Yourself: Learn about the signs of abuse and neglect, and understand how you can help. ▪️ Remember, child protection is everyone’s responsibility. Together, we can build a community where every child has a fair go. 🌟 #ChildProtectionWeek #EveryConversationMatters #CommunityResponsibility #SafeChildren #SupportFamilies #ProtectOurKids #NAPCAN #EveryChildMatters
