Exciting News from the 2024 Australian Timber Design Awards! We are thrilled to announce that Theca Timber has won two awards for our work on the Michael Kirby Building at Macquarie University: - Excellence in Timber Design (Public Building) - People’s Choice Award The Michael Kirby Building showcases how we transformed a 1980s concrete structure into a modern, sustainable, timber-framed masterpiece using cross-laminated timber (CLT). This innovation not only reduces the building’s carbon footprint but also creates a warm, collaborative environment for learning. Our two directors, Adam Shears and Paolo Aschieri, were accompanied by our NSW State Manager Timothy Devlin to attend this important event in Sydney. We are so proud to have been recognised in the presence of esteemed peers and industry professionals. We also want to express our heartfelt gratitude to all of you—our amazing followers—for voting in the People’s Choice Award. Your support means everything to us, and we couldn’t have achieved this without you! From preserving key structural elements of the original building to incorporating a stunning central atrium, scenic lift, and cantilevered CLT meeting rooms, this four-storey structure now stands as a world-class example of educational architecture. 🏀 A new #MassTimber sports hall to play ball in for decades to come. 🏗️ Project: St Aidan's Anglican Girls School Sport Hall in Corinda (Brisbane) 🌲 25 metre spanning glue-laminated timber (GLT) portal frames were an essential part of this sports precinct. Based on the primary structural portal frame, 87% of the structure is timber. 🌿 Timber’s renewable nature significantly reduced the project's carbon footprint and enriched the aesthetic appearance of the building. Designed as a space for athletes to excel, the sports hall mixes art and engineering, balancing aesthetic appeal with structural integrity. Jeremy Sue of Northrop led the structural design of the buildings. The project was a top 3 finalist in the 2024 Australian Timber Design Awards ‘Sustainability’ and ‘Commercial Building’ categories. This building is a testament to what we can achieve with timber, advancing environmentally responsible materials in sports infrastructure engineering. Just 3 Days Left Until the Timber Design Awards! The Timber Design Awards 2024 have honoured St Aidan’s Sports Hall in Brisbane with two nominations: ‘Sustainability’ and ‘Commercial Building’. The design highlights connectivity with a central café and courtyard, encouraging diverse sports participation. With parkland views and natural ventilation, the Glulam structure and sunshade canopy show case our dedication to creating a vibrant, sustainable environment. Theca Timber was entrusted with designing the engineered timber structure on short notice, providing a 3D model for seamless coordination with other trades. We supplied 135m³ of Spruce Glulam for the 23m-spanning portals, featuring tapered columns and beams. Another look at the iconic Upper House just in time for the Timber Design Awards! The Timber Design Awards 2024 have recognised the Upper House Building in Brisbane with two nominations in the categories ’Commercial’ and ‘Public Building’. Upper House is a breathtaking residential tower in South Brisbane, designed by Koichi Takada Architects and inspired by the forms of the Daintree Rainforest. At roof level, the ribbons twist and intertwine to become a shaded pergola for the generously proportioned recreational spaces. Theca Timber was involved from the very early beginning, participating in the tender hand-in-hand with Minicon Construction and consulting on the most cost-efficient way to build what, before then, was a concept design. We are incredibly proud of our role in bringing this vision to life and contributing to the creation of such an iconic structure. Glulam Milestone Video at The Sydney Fish Market We’re proud to present our latest milestone at Theca Timber – contributing to the iconic Sydney Fish Market project. Our very own Director, Adam Shears, joins industry leaders and experts to discuss the innovation behind this game-changing glulam project. As the biggest fish market in the Southern Hemisphere, this four-level marvel is set to transform the market experience. With 800 individual wooden segments crafted by Theca Timber, it's the most significant Harbourside project since the Opera House, on track for completion in 2025.
