How disruptive will AI really be for regulators? In a post-Robodebt Australia, there is broad (if uneasy) acceptance that AI will create seismic shifts in how governments deliver their regulatory programs. The question on everyones' minds is not if regtech AI will be used, but how it will be used. The novel risks that AI presents – including empathy and compassion concerns – are worrying to many Australians. Darren Menachemson GAICD, Partner at ThinkPlaceX Australia, has published his most recent article for The Mandarin. In it, he examines the requirements for governments to regulate the use of AI effectively. To read the full article, click here: https://lnkd.in/gzn_dSNH

We design solutions that help people and the planet thrive.
About us
ThinkPlace is a strategic design consultancy with a global network operating across Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Kenya, Senegal and U.S.A. For 15+ years, we have been tackling some of the world’s most complex challenges using design-led, human-centred approaches. We design with change leaders from the public, private and the non-profit sector and engage with the complexity and the messiness of real human experiences — how people live, work and play; how people experience products, services, regulations; how they navigate systems they interact with — health, education, energy, economic, regulatory, social welfare, to name a few. Globally we are a team of over 150 people who are passionate about making the world a better place. ThinkPlace has adopted the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as our guiding purpose. Every project we take on, all over the world, must ‘move the needle’ on these goals.

“The story is broken, not the people.” “Experts on tap, not experts on top.” “Help the old system die with dignity.” These are three of bits of wisdom Jon Alexander passed on to 60 of us (changemakers, leaders, clients and allies) at our inaugural #ExploringtheNew event in Aotearoa New Zealand last week. Goodlife Collective and ThinkPlace, with support from Voice of Aroha, launched this series to inject more hope, community and agency into Aotearoa. Jon was a brilliant first guest speaker, kicking our series off with rich examples on the power of agency where people and communities are creating new impacts plus changing their stories. Thanks Jon! Also thanks Laurie Foon, Deputy Mayor of Wellington City Council, for your insightful opening comments and positive energy! After the event, we posted initial thoughts on Jon’s talk at ThinkPlace - WāhiWhakaaro and are keen to share further insights via this great visual capture that one of our talented designers created, thanks Rachel McPhee! If reading this sparks your curiosity then please past it on, and I highly recommend Jon’s excellent book, Citizens- Why the key to fixing everything is all of us. New Citizen Project. 🧐 Are our designs truly inclusive? As technology and innovation further evolves, we need to question if we hold biases and ageism in current design approaches, and thus inadvertently neglecting the needs for aging populations. For Singapore Design Week this year, we invite designers and users in the older age demographic for an open conversation and a co-creation workshop. Collaboratively, we will explore the generational differences in the experience of design solutions and uncover opportunities to further promote age inclusivity in our future design approaches. Sign up today at https://lnkd.in/gwVckEjS About Singapore Design Week One of Asia’s premier design festivals, Singapore Design Week (SDW) celebrates Singapore’s distinctive brand of creativity, exploring design through three defining festival pillars: Design Futures (the design of the future and the future of design), Design Marketplace (lifestyle trends with a spotlight on Southeast Asia), and Design Impact (innovative solutions for a better world). Organised by the DesignSingapore Council, SDW is a celebration of creativity and innovation, championing thought leadership and showcasing the best of design from Singapore and beyond. sdw.sg #SDWSG2024 #SingaporeDesignWeek #TPSG #ThinkPlaceSG #ageism #bias #codesign #design #inclusivity #workshop #inclusivedesign

As part of the Women in Aviation Initiative, ThinkPlaceX Australia is running a series of behavioural nudge trials to support gender equality in the sector. One of our partners is Shoal Air, who are actively making a difference to empower women in the aviation industry. We’ve designed a series of resources and nudges for them, see below. We’re also working with a range of other aviation organisations as part of this trial, stay tuned for the results in the coming weeks. https://lnkd.in/grzBJMXf

We’re honoured to partner with the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) on a crucial co-design project focused on preventing sexual and family violence in diverse communities. In early July, we kicked off with whakawhanaungatanga, fostering the strong, trusting relationships that will carry us through this journey over the next four months. 🤝 With Cristy Trewartha leading a powerful session on community mobilisation, we’ve already seen meaningful connections form and collaborations blossom. 🌟 The passion and dedication of everyone involved are truly inspiring, and we’re excited to see the impact this work will have on our communities. The real highlight for us was witnessing the connections that formed. ✨ By the end of the week, we saw new friendships and collaborations blossoming, with people already planning to catch up and continue the conversation. These connections are the heart of what we do, and we’re hopeful that they will lead to long-lasting partnerships that benefit all communities involved. #CoDesign #CommunityEmpowerment #SocialImpact #EthnicCommunities #ViolencePrevention #Whakawhanaungatanga

Australia’s aged care sector has been failing our elderly. The Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission (ACQSC) is striving to change that. In 2021, the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety published findings that amplified the need for urgent action. The Commission described the sector as “woefully inadequate” and stated “many people receiving aged care services have their basic human rights denied”. It also highlighted that the sector was experiencing overburdensome regulation, yet this was ineffectively addressing risk. The recommendations provided by the Royal Commission prompted a once-in-a-generation regulatory reform, including the Aged Care Act and ACQSC (our national regulator) strengthening the capacity and capabilities of their Quality Assessors. The ACQSC engaged ThinkPlace and our partners at The Ed Institute to design an innovative learning environment to better support Quality Assessors and their job-readiness. The result is an enduring Learning & Development journey that creates a better-equipped workforce. Many teens finish school thinking there are two next steps – trade school or university. But what if we were to introduce them to a third? What if we could nurture future leaders with the skills to become innovative entrepreneurs? “What if” is a phrase we use frequently at ThinkPlaceX, and widening our lens usually pays off. In this project, we worked with the Bulimba Community Centre to design an immersive bootcamp for teenagers in the Brisbane area. The four-day program, called the Young Entrepreneurs Bootcamp, inspired future leaders to consider a career path that aligns with their untapped talents. We’ll be touching base with the cohort and sharing their ideas from the bootcamp in the coming weeks. Watch this space. Michael Bye

In this article in The Mandarin, the senior leadership of ThinkPlaceX in Australia – John Body, Sally Dorsett, Nina Terrey and Darren Menachemson GAICD – refute the notion that government is slow. In it, they argue that public servants face stratospheric demands in this highly complex world, and it’s up to us as designers, sensemakers and strategists to enable them to activate their enormous potential. Why? Because when governments prioritise innovation, co-design and pace, they can have a meaningful impact. When they engage focused and effective external experts, they strengthen their ability to deliver results, rapidly. Gone are the days of plastering the next buzzword across reports that will be disseminated and then forgotten. To create better futures, governments must do away with tick-box stakeholders that simply replicate capacity and redistribute budgets offshore. Collaborative action between public and private sectors has the potential to drive significant societal advancements. Here, our team explains how this is possible: https://lnkd.in/gr7qYdmG
