Unexpected find protocols at work. Last week during excavation of a new box culvert across an existing section of the Great North Road AnewX Pty Ltd came across an unexpected find. An earthenware pipe about 700mm below the road surface. AnewX enacted the unexpected find protocols, with work suspended until a check of the items' heritage status could be completed. The assistance of Artefact Heritage and Environment was sought, and after providing Artefact with location data, photos and the Review of Environmental Factors documentation, it was determined that the long redundant pipes could be removed and drainage improvements could continue. It is a pleasure to work with organisations who take their obligations seriously and respect the heritage status of the Great North Road as we work with Cessnock City Council to fully restore the function of this important regional and historic connection.
