On the 1st July WorkSafe Victoria made updates to requirements in relation to notifiable incidents, in particular incidents involving high risk machinery such as tractors, quad bikes, forklifts and earth moving machines. Last year WorkSafe accepted more that 8300 injury claims and a third of these claims involved machinery and equipment. Operating this type of equipment is a routine part of the workday for many businesses and it may be a challenge to ensure safety standards are maintained and complacency can easily creep in. Affected businesses have an opportunity to ask a few simple questions to make a difference: - Have risk assessments been completed for all plant and equipment in use and if so when where they last reviewed? - Does the plant and equipment have to be registered and if so is registration current? - Have any changes or updates to the plant and equipment being identified and assessed? - Is the plant and equipment being used for it’s designed purpose? - Is the plant and equipment being correctly maintained? - If the plant and equipment is not in use, is it being stored in a state that does not create a further risk? - Are the staff operating the plant and equipment correctly licensed or trained?

Use of AI tech in the workplace is higher than ever. We're seeing more AI-powered programs pop up and also an increasing number of our existing platforms and applications are building in AI functions. Many workers admit to using AI technology without their employer or manager knowing or approving. Whilst we're surely all about streamlining workflows... there are plenty of things to consider before using AI fora task such as internal document creation. As well as ChatGPTs own concessions also consider the following: ❎ Are your employees putting any confidential data where it shouldn't be? ❎ Is the AI output likely to be timely and relevant to your industry regulations and your business? ❎ Are your team presenting AI output as though it is newly generated content? But this doesn't mean there is no place for AI in document drafting, even within safety and compliance. Consider: ✅ Can employees use AI as an initial drafting or proof-reading tool? ✅ Are their non-proprietary concepts or general themes that can be explored using AI? ✅ Can AI have a go at summarising legislative updates or long-form text? Are your teams using AI in compliance? Do you think it has a place? #ai #AiInSafety #AIntCompliance #AIDocuments

Happy International Women’s Day to those in our network. Tucker & Young’s executives are proud to share that 50% of our directors are female. 😉 In all seriousness, this year is all about #InspireInclusion, and there are plenty of easy ways to do this at work. Here are a few of our favourites: - let women speak without cutting them off - don’t allocate “housekeeping” tasks to women unless it is a part of their role - highlight the success and contributions of those around you, especially those with less of a platform to speak - shut down sexist jokes or put the jokester on the spot with “I’m sorry but can you please explain the joke to me?” We’d also like to acknowledge the badass women in our networks including NSW Women in Construction and Transport Women Australia Limited. #iwd #iwd2024 #InternationalWomensDay

So the 'Right to Disconnect' has officially passed through parliament and received royal assent. 6 months from now we can expect the changes to the Fair Work Act to be a very hot topic. The 'right to disconnect' isn't as cut and dry as some may think, and it certainly isn't as simple as "my boss can't call me about anything outside of work ever because that's illegal". Now is a great time to have a read of the bill, seek advice, engage in employee and stakeholder consultation, and begin to get your basic frameworks and policies in place ready for the changes. As always, we can expect the government to talk through changes and amendments over the next 6 months, but for now, why not get a head start? Its never too soon to take a step forward to improve the work-life balance and wellbeing of your teams... and call me nerdy but there is something kind of thrilling about being ahead of the curve right? Being in a fit and alert state in the workplace is one of the cornerstones for keeping yourself safe while you're there. It sounds so simple and logical but many of us often overlook the importance of regular exercise. We all get busy with the chaos of life and can easily forget that a little bit of self-maintenance can do wonders. Stephen Covey (The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People) highlighted this when he spoke of the 7th Habit - Sharpen the Saw. He set out the four dimensions of renewal: - Physical - Mental - Spiritual - Social/Emotional Like with every habit, it can be difficult to find time for good exercise as we feel too busy, or perhaps you spend more time researching the most effective workouts when you could just be doing anything and moving your body! Just about everyone can set aside 10-15 minutes each day right? Why not start your day off right by incorporating a quick morning workout into your routine? Anything is allowed, the only precondition being that your get your heartbeat up! There's plenty of simple exercises you can begin with if you're out of the swing of things (and these don't require a peloton bike or expensive gym memberships): - Walking - Stretching - Running - Yoga - Meditation When you exercise, your body is rewarded with a burst of endorphins - hormones that have the power to make you feel happier, calmer, and more at ease. Your sleep will likely improve and stress and anxiety can be lowered too! To make life easier, start with an exercise you actually enjoy and try do it for just 15 minutes. Research has shown that it takes approximately 15-21 days of repeating an action for it to become a habit. Make it a part of your daily routine and you'll soon see the benefits! Safety can seem complicated, but simple changes like this can improve your workplace safety. Consider this your call to action... and as David Goggins says "Work hard. Stay disciplined." Cheers, Shane

Dear Reader, Taylor Swift's Melbourne run is officially over which means its only a short time until Sydney will be overtaken by Taylor-fever and the loudest woman this town has ever seen! If you, your friends or loved ones are The Lucky Ones with tickets to Accor, consider being a Mastermind and suggesting hearing protection for the night. The Tucker and Young team love the stylish and effective Loop Earplugs but honestly, anything with a decent rating is better than nothing to make sure you're Ready For It! (This might also be a great time to think about if your business is up to speed with meeting its managing noise and preventing hearing loss requirements...) #TaylorSwift #TaylorSwiftErasTour #hearingloss #HearingHealth #ManagingNoise #Loud

To run a successful on-site audit, follow these 7 steps (not THOSE "7 steps", THESE ones below). Many internal auditors start from step 4 and have all sorts of problems getting what they need from stakeholders. This approach slows down the process and leads to much poorer results. Its all in the planning, right? And if you're on the receiving end of an external audit, its best to build regular system, documents and operational checks into your organisation's workflow so you're confident and prepared for scheduled or surprise audits. #Auditing #AuditingServices #RoadTransport #7Steps #Prepare #iso9001 Alt text: The image shows a list of 7 "magic" audit steps. 1. Initiate the audit, 2. Conduct document review, 3. Preparing On-site Activities, 4. Conducting on-site activities, 5. Prepare the audit report, 6. Complete the audit, Conduct audit follow-up
