About us
Uluu is an exciting new biomaterial that's incredible for our oceans and climate. It fights global warming by sequestering carbon in anything, and everything, that's built with it. It's biodegradable - so it won't harm our environment or the creatures living in it. And, it's made from seaweed - an amazing, renewable resource, which cleans up our oceans, promotes marine biodiversity, yet doesn’t displace precious farmland. Uluu - reviving the world.

In 2023, Australian startups attracted $3.5 billion in investments, yet only 20% of those funds were directed toward impact-driven businesses. At last week’s panel at SXSW Sydney, we explored how Aussie VCs, family offices, investors, and funds can shift their capital - and mindsets - towards backing innovative startups tackling the planet's most critical issues. Thank you to SMH's tech editor David Swan for leading our insightful discussion alongside executive director Ingrid Albert, and to Alberts Impact Ventures' pioneering founders Michael Kingsbury (Uluu) and Kristi Knaack Riordan (Harvest B) for their wisdom! Home compost + marine biodegradability certification ✅ While Uluu looks and feels just like plastic, it won’t last forever in the environment. We just achieved two reputable TÜV AUSTRIA certifications for our PHA powder, guaranteeing our product breaks down in a garden compost heap 🌻🏡🌳 and in seawater 🐠🌊🪸 It means we can empower consumers to chop up their packaging and put in home compost alongside food waste. And it opens the door to clothing, outdoor apparel and other products that don’t shed persistent microplastics into the ocean. #Uluu #HomeCompost #Biodegradable #TÜVAustria

I can’t wait to share my startup journey with Uluu and be part of this important conversation. Join us on Tuesday October 15 at 4:45pm-5:30pm at Sydney’s International Convention Centre, Room E3.9. Western Australia warmly welcomed East Java Provincial Government representatives to Perth! In early September, the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation, through Invest and Trade Western Australia, welcomed a delegation, led by Dr Bobby Soemiarsono, Acting Secretary of the East Java Provincial Government, to Perth. The visit brought together senior representatives from both regions to discuss initiatives as part of the 2023 renewed sister-state relationship. The program included a joint working group meeting involving the WA Government, the Consulate-General of Indonesia in Perth, and the East Java Provincial Government as well as a business roundtable hosted by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA. During their visit, the delegation also met with Screenwest, and Uluu, a Perth-based business which has created an eco-friendly alternative to plastic using seaweed from East Java. It’s official: Uluu is ready to replace plastic in existing manufacturing equipment 🙌 We recently trialled Uluu pellets made from #seaweed in industrial equipment usually used to make things out of plastic—with awesome results. These ‘made with Uluu’ trays were produced through injection moulding, the most common manufacturing method for plastic. It's a super tricky object to make, because it has a single injection point and the material needs to spread all the way to the edges of the mould. A huge thank you to our amazing partners on this project Luigi Vandi and Vincent Mathel from The University of Queensland and UQ AMPAM - Advanced Materials Processing and Manufacturing, as well as former SDI Plastics director Kulbir Dhanda, with support from Advance Queensland, Queensland Strawberries and LuvaBerry Farm 🙏 #Uluu #PlasticReplacement #SustainableManufacturing Vision: Loysh Photography

I am thrilled to announce I’ll be speaking at SXSW Sydney! Alberts will be making its SXSW Sydney debut across two panels and I’ll be speaking at a Startups Track session titled ‘Mobilising Capital Towards Positive Impact, A Call to Arms for Aussie Investors and Funds.’ I’ll be joined on the stage by Dr Julia Reisser, co-founder behind Uluu – one of our Impact Ventures portfolio companies, on a mission to create a plastic-free future with its carbon-negative plastic replacement made from seaweed. David Swan, Technology Editor of The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald, will be kindly lending his wisdom and insights as moderator of our discussion around the urgent need for Aussie VCs, investors and funds to shift their capital – and mindsets – towards impact-focused startups solving some of the world's most pressing problems, without sacrificing returns. The countdown is on! I hope you can join our session on Tuesday October 15, from 4:45pm-5:30pm, at Sydney’s International Convention Centre, Room E3.9.
