Professor Walsh, a Laureate Fellow and Scientia Professor of #AI at UNSW, has made important contributions to computer science and the foundations of AI. His work, drawing from statistical physics, economics and game theory, addresses complex optimisation problems such as scheduling and vehicle routing, resulting in substantial economic and environmental benefits. A leading advocate for trustworthy AI, he is known for communicating complex ideas to policymakers, industry and the public. I’m thrilled to share that our team has been selected as one of the Top 5 finalists in the Innovator Pro Challenge! Our project, Sherlocked.ai, leverages Federated Learning to empower First Nations communities by simplifying access to small business loans, microfinance, grants, and subsidies. By protecting data privacy and streamlining the loan approval process, we aim to support financial growth and sustainability within these communities. I’m incredibly proud of my amazing teammates—Gautham Srinivas 📲, Manav Abichandani, Dean F., Cheuk Chi (Riley) Wong, and Ahnaf Khan—for all the hard work that has brought us to this stage, as we gear up for the final round at KPMG. A special thank you to UNSW Employability, particularly Nic Zumaran, Elise Heinz, Bronte Tartak, Vanessa Bakhos, Petrina Said, and Sam Miles, for facilitating this journey. The UNSW AI Institute and the School of UNSW Computer Science and Engineering hosted Senator Dave Sharma on campus and engaged in a thought-provoking discussion on the cutting-edge applications of AI, its far-reaching implications for society, and the critical ethical considerations that come with this rapidly evolving technology. It was a valuable exchange of ideas, underscoring the importance of collaboration between academia, industry, and government to navigate the future of AI responsibly. The excellent team from both the Robotics lab and the VR lab organised demonstrations for the Senator making it a highly successful meeting. We thank Senator Dave Sharma for the visit

👽 We are entering a time of unprecedented change. There is a great deal of good that AI can do, yet the risks of AI are not well understood. The potential is huge, the pace of change is also lightning. But what are we getting ourselves into? At last week’s thought providing fireside chat between Kate Crawford in conversation with Toby Walsh presented by the UNSW AI Institute, we were hit with the dark and chilling details of the cost of building and maintaining AI at scale. Some of the major costs and risks are: 💦 AI’s use of natural resources - energy and water is huge (the amount can power a small country). 👽 Human labour costs - mental health costs of doing the dirty work of filtering the data. 📖 Enormous amounts of training data required to train the machines. 💡 The governance on AI is still being developed. This is an exciting opportunity and area of change. So many more questions… On a positive note, there were many bright minds in the audience! Last week, the team of UNSW Computer Science and Engineering and UNSW Engineering, along with the UNSW AI Institute, hosted a captivating fireside chat with Scientia Prof Toby Walsh and Prof Kate Crawford. They delved deep into the multifaceted world of AI, from the nuances of generative AI to the ethical implications and societal impacts. Their insights were both thought-provoking and enlightening. Our heartfelt thanks to both Toby and Kate for their participation. 🙏 Thanks to Prof Bronwyn Fox for introducing the speakers at the event and Prof Julien Epps for the delivering the welcome speech. 💫 Sebastian Sequoiah-Grayson was at his articulate best as he supported us with Q&A and interacted masterfully with both the speakers and the audience. ✨ Special thanks to Lucian Hiss and the coordination team consisting of Vaiju D.
