I would like to thank Australian Federation of Air Pilots (AFAP) and the Australian Air Pilots MBF for the sponsorship and support of our UNSW School of Aviation awards evening. I was humbled to receive the prize for Best Safety and Teamwork - Second Year. I often recall a safety poster from the beginning of my career, "Mission First - Safety Always". With teamwork, accomplishing the mission becomes an easier task. I'm excited to continue this ethos into my years ahead. Thank you Carolina A. Visnadi for your support on this incredible journey.

✈️ International travel and working with aviation industry leaders are all part of the UNSW study experience for Bachelor of Aviation Management students Brian Mai, Edison Choy, Edmund O'Connor and Frank Pagaduan. These undergraduate students have recently returned from their internships at Cathay Pacific Head Office, Hong Kong, as part of the UNSW Science Work Integrated Learning (WIL) program. “The UNSW x Cathay WIL program gave me the invaluable opportunity to apply what I learnt in the classroom to a real-world international airline environment,” says Edison. “This experience has broadened both my knowledge and my mindset.” “The highlight was building a range of industry connections and realising the expansive range of roles that I could pursue within the aviation industry,” says Edmund. “I now have a much clearer idea of where I am headed in the future!” “I encourage anyone who wants industry experience to apply for the UNSW Science WIL programs, because you never know where in the world it will take you!” says Frank. “My journey in Cathay gave me invaluable experiences and provided guidance on my future in aviation and tourism; I got the opportunity to work with multiple cultures and people around the world,” adds Brian.  📸 (From left to right) Frank, Edmund, Edison and Brian in the Cathay Cargo Terminal. ⚡ Exciting Innovations in Drone Use ⚡ Check out this story from Channel 9 last night, showcasing a new initiative by Transgrid, as they trial cutting-edge drone technology this year. These drones are revolutionizing how we monitor our power lines! Not only are they safer, allowing crews to inspect the lines from a distance, but they can also fly closer to the lines, capturing sharper images. Even at high speeds, the drones generate highly accurate 3D laser images, giving Transgrid a precise view of any potentially dangerous vegetation nearby.  By removing the need for humans in these risky tasks, it creates a safer, more cost-effective solution—while also gathering better, real-time data on our energy infrastructure: https://lnkd.in/gzxBPT3x

Did you know the biggest runway at Sydney Airport was built to be able to land a space shuttle? That was just one anecdote among many that our UNSW Aviation Society students were treated to today in an exclusive airside bus tour. Led by Ramp Safety Coordinator Anthony Marci, and UNSW Aviation alumni, Security Coordinator Kevin Tao and Airport Planner Robyn Thomson, the students were thrilled to get up close and personal to airside operations. This included being so close to the flight path you could almost touch the aeroplanes swooping in to land. Huge thanks to Amanda Palmer for organising the tour and Liz Seatter for supporting this initiative.
