City Futures Research Centre leads research on urban planning, housing, development, social policy, health & wellbeing
About us
Our work advances the understanding of cities focusing on people, places, policies and technologies. We research the major urban challenges of city equity, housing, productivity, sustainability, resilience, governance and renewal. We do this in partnership with governments, industry, not for profit organisations and communities. Since its establishment in 2005, City Futures has provided a training ground for the next generation of urban thinkers, city shapers, and urban scientists. We provide ethical, evidence-based inputs to contemporary urban policy debates and the planning of 21st Century cities. With a vision to create a better and more sustainable future, the Centre is committed to the United Nation’s New Urban Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals.

🚲 Are we planning for cycling the right way? 🤔 Dr. Maryam Bostanara from the UNSW City Futures Research Centre dives into this question in her latest research!🚦 As cities push for more sustainable transport, it's crucial that planning tools evolve to reflect real-world cycling behaviors. Check out her insights here: https://lnkd.in/emwYziwU What do you think—are our cities getting it right when it comes to cycling infrastructure? Let’s discuss! ⬇️ 🚴♂️💬 #UrbanMobility #Cycling #SustainableTransport
🚲 New Publication Alert!🚲 Excited to share our latest research: "𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘤𝘺𝘤𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨: 𝘈𝘳𝘦 𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘮𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘴 𝘧𝘪𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘱𝘶𝘳𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘦?" published in Transport Reviews. To effectively encourage cycling, significant investment in suitable infrastructure is necessary, especially in emerging cycling cities. Decision-support tools play a crucial role in guiding infrastructure placement and policy development. However, for these tools to be truly effective, accurate transport models are needed to capture both transport and recreational cycling behaviour. This review examines various transport models and assesses their suitability in supporting cycling-friendly transport planning. 🔍 Key insights from our study: ✅ Gaps in transport models – Many models do not fully capture different cycling motivations, particularly non-transport cycling, which accounts for a significant share of trips in starter cycling cities. ✅ Lack of key data – Factors like individual attitudes, preferences, and motivations are often missing, despite being highly influential in cycling decisions. ✅ The multicollinearity challenge – Correlations between infrastructure, land use, and cycling behaviour make it difficult to isolate the true impact of each factor. ✅ Need for better data collection – We advocate for longitudinal cycling data and before-and-after studies to enhance transport models, ensuring better cycling policies and infrastructure planning. A huge thank you to our great research team and co-authors: Dr Hao Wu, Dr Lee Roberts, Prof Chris Pettit, and Prof Brian Lee. 📖 Read the full paper here 👉 https://lnkd.in/emwYziwU UNSW City Futures Research Centre UNSW Arts, Design & Architecture UNSW #SustainableMobility #CyclingInfrastructure #TransportModels #UrbanPlanning #CyclingResearch #ActiveTransport

🚨New Report Alert🚨 "Understanding contemporary demographic and economic drivers of household mobility and their policy implications" has been release by Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI). This research looked at why people move between urban and regional Australia, and identified the social, economic, demographic and policy factors driving these population shifts. Authored by Hoon Han, Matthew N., Laura Crommelin, Glen Searle, Brian Lee Parian Hoseini Access the report here : https://shorturl.at/AZ35T

The UNSW City Futures Research Centre is pleased to announce its latest publication in Springer's Computational Urban Science: "From Urban Clusters to Megaregions: Mapping Australia’s Evolving Urban Regions." This study, by Matthew N., Hoon Han and Chris Pettit, alongside colleagues from King's College London and the University of Sydney, examines Australia’s urban connectivity through percolation theory. The research demonstrates how urban clusters emerge from localised functional geographies and develop into broader regional networks. It identifies the critical distance thresholds at which regional towns and cities merge to form larger entities, offering measured insights into the processes that contribute to Australia’s urban landscape. It was a great pleasure to hold our first full partner meeting for the National Cycling Data and Analytics Platform (NCDAP). This project, supported by the Australian Research Council, brings together partners from 5 universities and 6 national cycling and urban data organisations from across Australia. Together, we’re conducting a national cycling survey, and building a data portal for cycling data and developing a decision support tool for predicting the impact of new cycling infrastructure. We’ve made great progress and look forward to sharing the project more broadly in the coming months. Keep an eye out for the NCDAP!
