Last week, I received an email from Starling Bank that raised an alarming point: the rise of AI-cloned voices and the serious threat they pose in the world of fraud. Starling even tested how real these voice clones can be by showing a cloned version of James Nesbitt’s voice to the man himself. Imagine the shock of hearing your own voice responding in real time! It’s mind-blowing how accessible AI tools have become, but with every breakthrough comes a darker side. The technology, once confined to Hollywood movies, is now available to anyone with a laptop and a wifi connection, allowing us to capture, clone, and even respond in real-time with someone else’s voice. What used to feel like sci-fi is now part of our daily reality. It's amazing, yet utterly terrifying. A real-life Black Mirror moment. Shoutout to Starling Bank for not only bringing awareness to this but also for suggesting a simple, low-tech safeguarding method: offline safe words.
