It’s great to see some changing attitudes around density and what Sydneysiders value in a neighbourhood. The Committee for Sydney and Ipsos have released the results of the annual Life in Sydney Survey and it reveals increasing support for higher-density housing with 46 % of Sydney residents backing increased density in their suburbs compared to 39 % in 2023 (Megan Gorrey, SMH 4, February 2025). In addition, people are becoming more open to living in an apartment themselves. See the results of the survey here:

UrbanTalk Podcast Episode 14 – Unsolicited Urbanism | NOW AVAILABLE The announcement of the new Housing Delivery Authority from the NSW Government makes our last podcast with Dallas Rogers feel even more relevant. This Homes NSW project highlights the frustrations that planners face as they work to address the housing crisis. A seniors housing project directed at assisting women over 60 facing homelessness is vital. We haven’t worked on this project but our quick desktop research shows it is located in an R3 zone that permits medium-density housing up to 9-metres in height. It is located close to shops, public transport and open space. When we take new housing projects forward planners need to recognise that residents often have a limited understanding of controls. Talking to existing communities about why sites are selected and how new developments address planning controls and desired future character is essential.
