Empowering irrigators through simple technology and people-centred learning

About us

Through our unique monitoring tools that give output as colours, the Virtual Irrigation Academy enables farmers to merge the science of irrigation with their own practical experience. Together with partners, we seek to reduce water use while increasing food production. We provide data that underpins the governance of irrigation to ensure that water is shared fairly and used efficiently.

Empowering Ugandan Farmers with Climate-Smart Agriculture Tools and Skills To combat the challenges of #ClimateChange and ensure sustainable agricultural practices in #Uganda, we recently trained over 70 stakeholders (district officials, farmer leaders, extension workers and water users) in the use of soil moisture and nutrient monitoring tools. These innovative #DecisionSupport tools help small-scale farmers optimize water usage, boost crop yields, and reduce environmental degradation. By providing farmers with real-time data on #SoilMoisture levels, we're enabling them to make informed irrigation decisions, preventing over-irrigation and conserving precious water resources. This not only improves crop production and productivity but also reduces fertilizer costs, labour, and greenhouse gas emissions. The training focused on the Virtual Irrigation Academy Ltd (VIA) tools, a user-friendly system that uses colour-coded signals to indicate optimal irrigation timing. As climate change continues to impact Uganda's agricultural sector, scaling up these proven #ClimateSmart technologies is essential for ensuring #FoodSecurity and building resilience. This training is a significant step towards empowering farmers with the tools and knowledge they need to thrive in a changing climate. Are you interested in partnering with us to scale up these climate-smart solutions? Let's discuss how we can work together to improve agricultural productivity and resilience in #Uganda and beyond. The training was organized by the Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa in collaboration with MAAIF Uganda and the National Agricultural Research Organisation - NARO Uganda under the auspices of the Accelerating Impacts of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA) project. • On United Nations day, we are reflecting to how V.I.A has advanced in the following areas of the UN Sustainability Development Goals: 2-Zero Hunger, 9- Industry, innovation & Infrastructure; 13-Climate Action & 15-Life on Land Catch up on the latest Project Management Institute (PMI) Interview with V.I.A Managing Director, Simon Dyer, as we have been honored as  one of PMI Most Influential Projects of 2024, for helping small scale farmers better manage water resources to boost crop yields with irrigation moisture senors. • 🤝#CollectiveTriumph: The Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (LDARD) conducted a survey of 75 small-scale farmers who received VI.IA Soil Moisture and Solute monitoring systems, which were made possible by the collaborative efforts of DLARD, World Vision, and VIA facilitating training and ongoing farmer support in the water-scarce region. Capacity building on irrigation scheduling tools has been identified as a critical gap in the growth of smallholder irrigation farmers. The Irrigation Scheduling Tools (IST) pilot project addresses a knowledge gap by introducing farmers to simple, low-cost, and user-friendly water-saving technology for soil moisture monitoring. See the results of irrigation scheduling, monitoring water application, ease of use, and increased water use efficiency by using the Wetting Front Detector (WFD), Chameleon Card, and Chameleon WI-FI System. 🙌Special thanks to Ms. Dabone Selboa, (DLARD) Agricultural Scientist, for conducting this survey.
