About us
Watertrust Australia Ltd is a new, independent national policy centre with a mission to improve the way decisions are made about Australia’s inland waters and catchments. Established by a coalition of 16 philanthropic funders who have committed over $31 million to help secure its operations for at least 10 years, Watertrust Australia Ltd will complement and contribute to policymaking through impactful consultation, deliberation, collaboration and co-design. Watertrust Australia will be incubated at the Australian Academy of Science in Canberra for its first five years. Governance and management will remain entirely independent of the Academy.

For the past year Watertrust Australia has been supporting First Nations leaders explore and develop ways to increase First Nations' participation in upcoming water policy reform processes. What started with Watertrust convening an interim working group to shape a roundtable, has since grown to supporting the working group's exploration of options for a more comprehensive engagement between First Nations, governments, and non-Indigenous water users in upcoming water policy reforms.
