With so much unprecedented global change over the last few years, it’s worth pausing to take stock and ask ourselves: Is Australia still ‘The Lucky Country?’ Gallup’s 2024 State of the global workforce report has painted a clear picture of a world still in flux in the face of an uncertain future. But on closer inspection, it seems clear that the values and principles underpinning Australia feel stronger and truer than ever. So what are the headlines? Optimism shines through. Despite Australia and New Zealand sitting roughly in the average when it comes to engagement (5th @ 25%) and sadness (7th @ 19%), we’re more likely to see ourselves as ‘thriving’ than anyone else in the world (1st @ 60%). That roll-up-your-sleeves sense of Australian optimism is clearly still alive and well. Down to earth and in it together Although we’re a touch more stressed than the rest of the world on average (4th @ 48%), we continue to keep our cool and look out for each other, with healthily low anger (9th @ 15%) and loneliness (10th @ 13%) scores. The future looks bright Despite a slight drop year on year, Australia remains the clear leader in terms of employment optimism (1st) with 79% agreeing that now is a good time to find a job, and only 43% (7th) actively looking for a new job. So what’s the learning? There's certainly more nuance at play the deeper you get into the report, but it's spiritiing to see so many Australians and New Zealanders feeling confident and optimistic about the future. Organisations looking to recruit promising new talent have a golden opportunity to reach a highly passionate, positive and job-curious workforce. The key in cutting through? A focus on #thriving and #connected workspaces, a commitment to driving a lively internal #culture, and a strong guiding #Purpose to continue to aspire to.
