Can landscape regeneration be profitable? The answer is yes. It's already happening. But these regenerative models are far from mainstream. Investment is needed — not just in the models themselves, but in the technology and science that sit behind them. Which means first-movers are needed too — de-risking and validating emerging models so other investors can follow suit. That's where Wedgetail comes in. Great Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) article over the weekend about the work Lisa Kate Miller and Canva co-founder Cameron Adams are doing to protect the environment. We often hear about the philanthropy of the other Canva co-founders Melanie Perkins and Cliff Obrecht, who have pledged to give the majority of their wealth to charity. Lisa and Cameron are taking a different approach, using impact investing to tackle biodiversity and environmental restoration. Through Wedgetail, the company Lisa founded, and their Tasmanian property the Quoin, they’re focused on conserving and restoring ecologically important areas. What sets Wedgetail apart is its focus on investing to drive real change. Wedgetail gives loans to businesses that are having a positive impact on the landscape, and grants to non-profit organisations regenerating valuable areas. Lisa started her career in zoology before moving into tech, where she worked with some of Australia’s fastest-growing companies like Canva as an early team member. Now, she’s bringing that same drive and creativity to tackling biodiversity, conservation and climate change. It’s inspiring to see successful innovators like Lisa and Cameron putting their wealth to work for good — blending impact investing and philanthropy, all with sustainability and the planet’s future at the core. With the year’s end approaching, we’ve taken a moment to reflect. However, we’ve remained aware that for nature, a year is but a moment. Trees measure their lives in decades, coral reefs in centuries, and the Earth itself in eons. What truly endures isn’t the turn of a calendar page, but the ripple effects of our actions. As 2025 draws closer, 2030 and 2100 are drawing closer too. Humans are one species among millions, yet our influence on the future of all life is immense. This influence comes with a responsibility to think beyond ourselves, to consider every species we share this planet with and the intricate systems that connect us all. And therein lies the key to tackling the biodiversity crisis. We must think in stages and systems. We must reimagine the world we want now and the world we’ll never see. And we must take the time to celebrate small wins without losing sight of the long journey ahead. Every day, all of us co-write the future. #naturepositive

Death affects all of us deeply, with diverse traditions and practices worldwide. There is much to learn from the ways different cultures honour their dead. By drawing from both ancient and emerging practices, we can find environmental approaches to death that could evolve with population growth. Furthermore, these approaches could foster new economic models that benefit both local communities and nature’s ecosystems alike, creating a system that respects both life and death in nature-positive ways.
