It was a privilege last week to spend a few days visiting some our Wilmar Sugar Australia Limited cane farms, mills and refineries to learn more about the process that brings our sugar all the way from the paddock 🌾 to the plate 🍽 I was impressed by the scale of our industry from end-to-end, the diversification that’s happening & all the efforts geared towards operating sustainably across the group; 🌱 We visited a 3rd generation cane farming family in Sarina & heard about their regenerative practices like recycling water & using by-product of the sugar crushing process called “mill mud” to reduce use of commercial fertilizers while increasing ratoon of the cane (number of yields from a single planting) 🏭 Checked out Plane Creek & Pioneer Mills; both mills reuse the fibre left over from the sugar cane crush called “bagasse” as fuel for our large mill boilers to produce steam. The energy in the steam is then converted to electricity ⚡ Wilmar are one of Australia’s leading generators of renewable energy, exporting enough power to the grid annually to power around 60,000 homes. 🚜 Visited one of our commercial Wilmar Burdekin Farms who have incorporated amazing irrigation automation & GPS technology to record soil conditions & accurately apply fertilizer to maximize yield while minimizing waste. Thanks to all the passionate people from across the group who generously shared time with us to showcase their sites & fantastic work, we learnt so much 🙏 Matt Donn, Nigel Stevenson, Dallas Reid, Domenic Calderone, Georgia Nilon, Rob Jurg, Matthew Norton, Jared Sunderland, Chris Scovazzi, Kylie Newman, Leanne Oliveri, Olivia P

  • Meet our Victoria Mill Manager Operations, Scott Costabeber. Scott rejoined our business three years ago, having started his career in sugar mills back in 1989, as a Chemist at Macknade Mill. These days, he’s in charge of operations at Victoria Mill, which is the largest of our two sugar factories in the Herbert region and one of Australia’s biggest sugar mills. #engineering #sugarmill #operationsmanager

  • Our operations managers see a lot of sugar when it’s being manufactured in the factories they run, but they rarely get to see it stockpiled in the massive sugar sheds run by STL. Earlier this month, our Operations Managers Leadership Team visited the Lucinda Bulk Sugar Terminal in the Herbert region, where the raw sugar made at our Victoria and Macknade mills is stored ahead of export. The leadership team includes the operations managers from our eight Queensland sugar mills, as well as our Sarina Distillery and Yarraville ethanol distribution centre. The team members were given an overview of the sugar sampling process at the sugar receival stage before touring the facility. They commented on the high standards of cleanliness at the terminal, as well as the high levels of automation and effective safety devices. Thanks to David Ruggieri, Manager Terminal Operations – Lucinda and Townsville, for hosting the tour. • Our Grower Marketing team was lucky enough to get clear skies and calm seas when they took growers on a tour of the Lucinda Bulk Sugar Terminal and jetty recently. We regularly host tours of the port facilities where our raw sugar is shipped to world markets. It's an opportunity for growers who supply sugarcane to our mills to see the export end of the supply chain. The Lucinda facility, near Ingham in North Queensland, is owned by Sugar Terminals Limited and boasts the longest service jetty in the southern hemisphere. At 5.76km long, it actually follows the curved contour of the earth. The recent tour was hosted by Franco Zaini and Megan Hawke from our Grower Marketing team, and Terminal Supervisor Daniel Castorina. #export #sugarterminal #supplychain #rawsugar

We’ve got a ‘sweet’ story to share with you about how sugar is helping electrify our homes. 🍭 For over 25 years, we’ve worked with Wilmar Sugar Australia Limited to convert bagasse – a sugarcane by-product – into clean, green energy for our customers. Ergon Energy Retail purchases approx. 209,000 MWh of renewable energy per year from Wilmar Sugar and Renewables – enough to power around 37,000 homes for 12 months. Our Manager of Energy Market Development Daniel Sanders said Ergon Energy Retail’s Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Wilmar supports the energy transition and local communities. “Our PPAs with Wilmar and other renewable energy providers allow us to supply clean energy to our customers, while also providing a major economic boost to regional Queensland communities,” Dan said. “The agreements also help us reduce our wholesale energy costs and meet our environmental compliance requirements, providing a win for our business, partners, customers and the community,” he said. Wilmar Sugar and Renewables’ Cogeneration and Energy Manager, Paul Trayner, said Wilmar is Australia’s largest producer of renewable energy from biomass. “Bagasse is nature’s battery and each year we convert over five million tonnes of the product into renewable energy.” Paul said. “This fuels our mills and allows us to export significant amounts of renewable power to the grid, all while preventing waste and minimising our impact on the environment,” he said. Ergon Energy Retail is one of the largest purchasers of renewable energy generated in Queensland, supporting the energy transition and the journey to net zero. #RenewableEnergy #EnergyTransition #Renewables #Biofuel #SugarIndustry #QEJP

Our Burdekin Farms team picked up an award today for the highest average CCS for a farm supplying Pioneer Mill. The farm averaged 16.25 CCS (Commercial Cane Sugar) for the 2023 season. Our Burdekin Farms Operations Manager Paul Young (left) accepted the award from Burdekin Productivity Services Chairman Bryce Davies. It's the second time the Wilmar Farms team has won a Burdekin Productivity Services award for CCS at this farm, which is located at Mona Park, near Ayr. We operate farms across all four of our Queensland milling regions under the best practice principles of the industry-run Smartcane BMP Program. #productivity #award #canefarming
