Optimising mental wellbeing of the elderly by building workforce capability.
About us
The common but big mistake is to assume that mental health outcomes in older people are the responsibility of experts. To improve mental health outcomes requires providing support for everybody which is what Wise Care does. Wise Care exists to help aged care providers recognise that mental wellbeing in elders affects all aspects of their business. From initial client engagement to service delivery and exiting services and from staff onboarding to retention and the management of risk of compassion fatigue and burnout. Wise Care is perfect for providers who have client disengagement due to declining health and social isolation. When they work with us, they achieve better client engagement and reduce risk of compromised mental wellbeing. Older adults with declining health are at an increased risk of disengagement, isolation and declining mental wellbeing. Through internal audit, staff training and licensed group program we tackle these risks. Our advantage points include: - workshops endorsed by the Australian College of Nursing (ACN) and Austalian Community Workers Association (ACWA) - workshops count towards continuing professional development - holistic approach to care involving families - training is easy - relevant - upskill workers in a team approach

I'm so excited to be launching my new podcast, So You Work in Aged Care. When I started The Voice of Aged Care podcast, it was the first Australian podcast focused on issues within the aged care sector, giving a voice to those working in both residential and home care. After 5 years and almost 60 episodes, it feels like the perfect time to switch the focus to the wellbeing of aged care workers. While Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) are available in many workplaces to provide support to workers, the recent survey we conducted shows there is a gap and a need for resources and information to be more widely available to support aged care workers. In my new podcast, So You Work in Aged Care, my intention is not to provide support as a psychologist, but rather, to tackle the bigger issues, help employees process what happens at work, and create a healthier work-life balance. Intimacy and dementia 💫 In this series of podcasts, we are exploring varies topics through case studies – and today we are looking at intimacy and dementia. 💫In this episode you will learn: Rights of elders when it comes to their intimacy needs The impact of dementia on intimacy Safety awareness and the barriers to intimacy in late life. 💫Interestingly, when we talk about dementia and intimacy, it tends to focus on the inappropriate behaviours, and we can fail to acknowledge the actual need for intimacy and how to address that. 💫In the last couple of years, the rights of those within aged care settings have significantly changed, so much so that a person from outside can come in and have intimate relations with a resident so long as there is consent, they know the person and the resident has the capacity to make that decision. I know that a number of aged care homes also allow sex workers to visit. We can’t say who can and cannot have intimate relations with another person, unless there is a lack of consent. 💫Listen Here: https://lnkd.in/gUWbkX-B

🎧 Voice of Aged Care *NEW EPISODE* 🗣We cannot talk about routine management and activities of daily living (ADL) without acknowledging the impact it has on workers. 🤯Time pressures are huge, regardless of what your role is, as there is so much to be done. We have had recent changes in Australia within the residential aged care sector in terms of how service delivery is measured. 🤯Every time there is a change it evokes stress, anxiety and fear from workers who wonder if they are going to keep up with the requirements of the new regulations. 🤯 So how can we best manage our time and get it all done, when we have so many things going on, and so many disruptions and unexpected things coming up? In this episode you will learn: 🌟 Simple strategies to reduce overwhelm when supporting an elder in their day-to-day life 🌟 The four pillars of a successful day and how to help elders include these in their routines 🌟 Practical ideas to help to support elders in planning their own successful day. 👇 👂Listen Here: https://lnkd.in/gTW-W8Ux

As most of you know, dementia is a neurological condition. It is a term for loss of memory and other thinking abilities, which are severe enough to interfere with an individual’s daily life. Sentence structure and practical strategies to address this repetitive behaviour is something I’ve been asked about many times over the years. Often we know it is dementia causing these behaviours, but we don’t want to spend our days having the same conversation over and over again. So what can we do instead? Listen to this special edition of Voice of Aged Care podcast where we cover a number of case studies. In this episode you will learn: - How to improve communication with elders impacted by dementia - The importance of uncovering what is behind their desire to go home - Why it can be difficult for elders with dementia to articulate how they feel. Please, let me know your thoughts about this episode and feel free to share with your network. https://lnkd.in/grQ4HmEU

Thrilled that the latest paper I have been working on with a team of researchers from University of Newcastle and health professionals has been published by the Journal of Applied Gerontology. For me, the voice and experience of those directly impacted by #dementia is so important to be heard. Hopefully our publication will help better inform care for unpaid carers as their loved one transitions into care. Congratulations on the acceptance of your paper Understanding dementia carer experiences before admission to a residential aged care facility: Implications for integrated care. (DOI: 10.1177/07334648241261454/ ID: JAG-24-0089.R1).
