Batteries in bins means fires in our waste and resource recovery (WARR) infrastructure. 🔋in 🗑 =🔥 This fire in the Adelaide Hills yesterday caused at least $150,000 worth of damage to the East Waste - Eastern Waste Management Authority collection vehicle. Congratulations to the driver for their quick actions to save the truck from being completely destroyed. WMRR reiterates the message to the community that batteries - whether in a product or loose - don't belong in any kerbside bins. Please return them to nearest battery collection point. We again call on all state governments to address the gap in the system which leaves items with embedded batteries no safe collection and disposal pathway. Those that make these products really must take these products back! Faced without a safe disposal pathway, consumers are incorrectly disposing of vapes and other battery powered items in the nearest bin, where they pose a major fire risk for essential WARR workers, vehicles and facilities – and as can be seen in this vision - especially when crushed. In addition to the cost caused by the fire damage, it is also forcing up insurance premiums. NSW has established a safe collection and disposal trial across 21 community recycling centres and South Australia has committed to announcing a collection system shortly, but what about the remaining states? They and our infrastructure and workers are not immune from this problem. The WARR industry needs urgent action from the remaining states and territories and we need to see real tangible action from all environment ministers on this crisis when they meet in December - no more kicking the can down the road - particularly with a Federal Election coming early 2025. Our workers deserve to be safe too. Rob Gregory Gayle Sloan #wmrr #warr #dontbinbatteries #batterysafety #batteryrecycling #recycling #embeddedbatteries

Did you know there are 7.6 million tonnes of food waste each year in Australia, accounting for around 3% of the country’s #carbon emissions? If food waste was a country, the #emissions would be third to only China and United States. WMRR is excited this issue is being tackled by End Food Waste Australia who have launched a behaviour change campaign, called The Great Unwaste, to highlight the problem and provide practical #solutions, especially for #households which account for more food waste than any other part of the supply chain. Reducing food waste by buying only what we need and making sure we use it is key to both reducing carbon emissions and saving money! Let’s buy just in time rather than just in case! Throwing away perfectly good #food is costing the #planet and the #pocket. It is estimated food waste costs households $2,500 a year. The waste and resource recovery industry has been calling for a national education campaign helping people to 'avoid' for years. WMRR has signed up to this campaign - have you? Please sign up to support this campaign and help get the message out. https://lnkd.in/g5bdebgU #wmrr #warr #foodwaste #sustainability #avoidance #compost #organics #recycling #

As part of the WMRR’s commitment to foster and support emerging talent across the waste and resource recovery industry, the Association delivers the Young Professionals Scholarship Program at our two (2) national conferences each year, providing those 36 years and under the opportunity to present to industry peers, with all expenses related to travel and registration covered. WMRR had a very competitive and extensive number of entries for this Conference, and we are thrilled to congratulate Alex Keyte Beattie from Tonkin + Taylor (T+T) as the scholarship winner for the inaugural Australian Resource Recovery Conference in Adelaide on 16-17 October 2024. Alex has been with the #environmental consultancy for nine (9) years across Australia and New Zealand and in the waste, resource recovery and circular economy team for four (4) years after studying environmental science at The University of Waikato – skills which come in handy on a daily basis in her current role. As Alex says ‘a lot of work in the industry comes down to managing environmental impacts.’ Her presentation, Resource Recovery in Remote Locations: Lessons from the Pacific, will draw on T+T’s work across Pacific Islands including the Marshall Islands, Chatham Islands, Niue and the Federated States of Micronesia, outlining how lessons from these projects can be translated to work in regional and remote Australia, and the importance of developing locally appropriate #solutions rather than replicating #systems and #processes from more densely populated areas which may not translate. She urges unconstrained thinking in identifying and making the most of opportunities afforded in remote locations that are not always possible in an urban setting. Alex will explain the importance of pragmatism, maximising local buy-in and utilising local strengths and #resources. In remote or isolated locations, she argues the key lessons are more about approach than the physical infrastructure and working ‘with’ the #community rather than ‘for’ the community. Make sure you register for the Australian Resource Recovery Conference to see Alex’s full presentation at 11.40am during the Regional and Remote Session on day two (2). Limited late registrations for #ARRC24 are still available today by emailing info@wmrr.asn.au or calling 02 8746 5000. #wmrr #warr #resourcerecovery #recycling #wastemanagement #zerowaste #carbon #greenjobs #ruralandregional #pacific #pacificislands #systemsthinking
