About us
Women’s Property Initiatives (WPI) is a not-for-profit that develops and provides affordable long-term housing for vulnerable single women and single women with children. We work with the private, public and community sectors to develop our housing which is rented at no more than 75% of the market rate or 30% of household income. WPI believes that single women and single mothers face significant disadvantage when it comes to employment opportunities, ability to work and income. They often have the greatest need for safe, affordable long-term housing. We seek to provide them with this housing as a foundation for a better life and a secure future for their children. Many of our beneficiaries are women who have experienced domestic violence, whilst others are from culturally diverse backgrounds or are leaving the correctional system. All of these women were vulnerable and needed understanding. Without WPI they faced great risk of homelessness. Obtaining safe, long-term housing has had a very profound effect on the lives of these women and their families, enabling them to live with dignity and contribute to their communities.

They've arrived! Today these new homes made journey from the Modular Spaces factory in Melton to site in Regional Victoria. By tomorrow evening, seven modules making up three 2-bedroom dwellings for The Nest project will be safely secured at their forever home. Over the next few weeks, the modules will be fitted off, and we will begin our extensive external works and landscaping package. These homes will create solid foundations for young mothers and their children at risk of homelessness, and we are thrilled to reach this important milestone! Thanks to our partners the Property Industry Foundation, The Bridge Youth Service, Schored Projects, Gallagher Jeffs, Modular Spaces, Maddocks and our many generous donors.

It was great to gather for lunch with some wonderful WPI supporters this week where our CEO, Roberta Buchanan, and Chief Commercial Officer, Lucy Simms shared a progress report and project updates. We were extremely fortunate to be hosted by JLL in their beautiful Business Lounge with stunning views over Melbourne. Our work would not be possible without these generous individuals and businesses and we thank them for their commitment to providing homes for vulnerable women and children. Big thanks to JLL for helping us to share our impact!

The best part of the job indeed. Thank you so much to Bindle - Custom Corporate Gifting, their generous suppliers and to Catherine Blackford for these amazing welcome gifts for our renters. Often our renters have been through very tough times and it is wonderful to make them smile.
The best part of working in community housing is always when you get to hand over the keys to a home to a new renter. At Women's Property Initiatives alongside the keys, we can now provide our new renters with "Welcome Home" gifts thanks to the team at Bindle - Custom Corporate Gifting and all their generous suppliers, who have kindly donated these beautiful boxes full of goodies. The gifts alongside a Welcome Home card show we care and are full of goodies to help our newest renters self-care. A huge thanks to Lucy Simms and Catherine Blackford for making this happen!

Nationally, the WGEA Reporting median remuneration gender pay gap is 19%. Over the course of a year, the median of what a woman is paid is $18,461 less than what a man is paid. We know this contributes to women's disadvantage when it comes to accessing safe, affordable and secure housing. On this Equal Pay Day, we also ask you, what steps can you take to address the gender pay gap?
Today is Equal Pay Day, marking the 50 days into the new financial year that Australian women must work to earn the same, on average, as men did last year. The Australian Bureau of Statistics released data last week sharing that the full-time base salary national gender pay gap had dropped to 11.5%. This gender pay gap is based on full time workers, base salary only. This shows some progression, but clearly there’s more work to do. This year's theme is "it doesn't add up." So what’s Equal Pay? Equal pay is the concept of women and men being paid the same for performing the same role or different work of equal or comparable value. In Australia, this has been a legal requirement since 1969. The gender pay gap is different to equal pay. Gender pay gaps are not a comparison of like roles. Instead, they show the difference between the average or median pay of women and men across organisations, industries and the workforce as a whole. Workplace Gender Equality Agency research has identified 3 main contributors to Australia’s gender pay gap: ➡ gender discrimination (36%) ➡ care, family responsibilities and workforce participation (33%), ➡ gender segregation by job type and industry (24%) It’s 2024 and hard to believe that closing the gender pay gap is still needed. But it is. So on this Equal Pay Day, we ask you what steps can you and your organisation take to close the gender pay gap? Want to learn more? Check out these WGEA resources: https://lnkd.in/gSefGWxg

The team were thrilled to view the beautiful homes that are now available for women living in financial stress. This is a very impactful partnership for WPI and we thank Local for their continued support of both our work and our renters. The amenity is incredible, and we have no doubt this will be life changing for the women that are moving in here over the coming weeks. Thank you Local! #partnerships #housing #impact
