Women on Boards supports women on their board & leadership journey

About us

Women on Boards, founded in 2006 in Australia and the UK in 2012, is a thriving network of extraordinary women who come together as they commence or continue their board and leadership journeys. Our vision is to have gender balance and cultural diversity within board and leadership roles. Since our inception in 2006, WOB’s vision has been to increase the number of women on boards and in leadership roles to achieve a minimum of 40% women on boards and across leadership roles. We welcome the fact that many other advocacy groups have since adopted our founding vision. Many boards across many sectors have achieved this 40% milestone. However within gender we now need to look more closely at cultural diversity on boards and raise awareness and create opportunities for culturally diverse women to connect, network and interact with boards. WOB Membership is open to all. It's free to register with a fee to join as a Full or Premium Member. Advantages of membership include: - Access to full details of all board & committee positions on our Vacancy Board - Support when applying for board roles - Access to WOBShare, our member-only online community - Up to 30% discount on WOB events & workshops - Access to free member only events, such as WOBChat - Information & resources to assist and motivate you We also promise to inform, support, connect, mentor and encourage you in your directorship and career journey.

Why interviews matter? Interviews are a critical part of the recruitment process -regardless if you are a graduate applying for your first role or an experienced Director being interviewed as a potential Chair. Yet for many people, interviews remain a stressful and difficult process to navigate and in many cases can mean the difference between success and failure. Mastering how to interview with skill and confidence in different contexts is a critical planning piece in balancing the precision and artistry involved when it comes to landing leadership and board roles. Jane Crombie, Board and Governance Specialist at Directors Australia, knows better than most the difference a quality interview can make to a board candidate. She talks about why interviews matter in this LinkedIn Live with WOB's Claire Braund.

Private Equity Unpacked Famous investors, Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger, have labelled Private Equity a 'total fraud'. The alternative view is that companies benefit from deep, high quality capital markets to fund operations and expand their business. Private Equity can provide a faster and larger capital injection than a public market transaction, such as a share issue. The Australian private equity market has grown significantly for a number of years. Assets under management in Australian-focused private equity funds nearly tripled in size between 2010 and 2024 to $66 billion. T What is your view on Private Equity? Is it good, bad or meh for Australian companies? Do you really know how Private Equity works? Unpack these and other Private Equity mysteries, and explore some real investment stories with seasoned Private Equity practitioner Mark Richardson, in conversation with WOB Executive Director (and former journalist) Claire Braund OAM.

Men can feel a bit out of place on International Women's Day, so WOB's co-founder and Executive Director, Claire Braund OAM pulled together six tips on how to be a good male ally - today and all days. 1) Allyship does not mean baking banana muffins for the team morning tea or telling everyone you are leaving an important meeting to take your 7 year old daughter to soccer. 2) While mentoring and coaching are important - sponsorship is critical. 3) Network access for women at all levels is a game changer - lunches, dinners and meetings. 4) Give women room to speak in a meeting – actually ask their opinion. 5) Be brave enough to share what you are paid with the women in the same position. 6) Build trust - does your female colleague know that come what may you ‘have her back'. www.womenonboards.net

  • It’s been a privilege and a pleasure to partner with Governance Institute of Australia during Megan’s tenure as CEO. We wish her all the very best for her future endeavours.

CEO at Governance Institute of Australia

I'm moving on.... After six years at the helm of the Governance Institute, I have taken the difficult decision to move on from the Institute and make way for a new leader to take the organisation on the next phase of its journey. It is never an easy decision to make, but I feel the timing is right for both me and the Institute after six fabulous years. I’m incredibly proud of what the Institute has achieved over that time and am confident that it is well placed to flourish over the years ahead. Some of those achievements include: - The strengthening of the foundations of the Institute including operational and process reform, digital transformation, and a strong culture of professionalism and engagement;  - a significant modernisation and uplift in governance;  - enhanced profile and strength of voice in public policy;  - a sound financial position off the back of a successful property negotiation in 2022; and   - the launch of, and infrastructure build associated with the Governance Academy, including a comprehensive capability framework, newly designed short-courses and certificates, a new suite of capability aligned micro-credentials and a capability profiling tool, CapabilityPro, all now launched in market.    The Institute has a clear strategy for value creation for our members and achieving our purpose. A significant part of that strategy (the development of the Academy) is now largely in place, and we are looking forward to see the fruits of that effort materialise over the coming twelve to eighteen months as we strengthen our position as a TEQSA accredited Institute of Higher Education. This is our point of difference.        Our members and volunteers are the backbone of our success, and I have so enjoyed working with them on so many issues over this time. I look forward to continuing to be highly engaged as a member over the years ahead and remaining part of our strong membership community.    My time at the Institute has been enhanced by working with some amazing people to whom I am indebted for their support, encouragement and generosity. There are too many to thank individually, but I will carry many of those relationships forward fondly.     I’ll be finishing up formally in early April, having given notice to the board some time ago to allow for a timely recruitment and succession process. As I embark on the next chapter in my own career (more details to come in the months ahead) I wish nothing but the greatest of success for the Institute and its members. Congratulations to Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra (TSO) for its appointment of 25 year old Rachel Kelly as its principal tuba player following a blind audition. This is the first time in the TSO’s 75 year history that a woman has held this role. Only 10% of Tuba players in global orchestras are female. TSO chief executive Caroline Sharpen told the ABC that the blind audition process was designed to weed out any bias and that the TSO was “spellbound” by Rebecca’s playing. Congratulations 🙌 TSO and Rebecca. #BettinaBettina Pidcock, GAICD, SFFin #wob
