This year, ReimaginED will feature presentations on national education reform projects in Bermuda and Papua New Guinea. Emma Scott and Martin James from Innovation Unit will walk participants through a roadmap of their work with the Bermuda Ministry of Education and the island's public school system that aims to transform schools and the education system itself. Martha Bentley and Jodie Kirchner from the KTF (Kokoda Track Foundation) will share stories of the development of education in remote PNG, discuss the transformative nature of quality education in communities with limited access to resources, and provide participants with the opportunity to discuss and reflect on the impact of a post colonial model of education. ReimaginED24 will feature a breakout session on the Ears of the Heart Project. The purpose of this workshop is to centre an Indigenous way of sensing and seeing each other, human to human, without roles, or categorisation. This is possible when we notice the difference between listening with our Ears on our Heads and listening with our Ears on our Hearts. This session will share three understandings that articulate a compassionate systems approach through an Indigenous lens: 1. The Ears of the Heart "map" as a Framework and method of transforming the way we listen to each other. 2. The capacities needed to cultivate the Inner and Outer awareness of how systems transformation can take place. 3. The barriers that exist as we try to create the changes of the current reality we seek to transform. The project will combine architectural biomimicry and regenerative construction materials with the new Biomimicry Design Spiral and an innovative model for evidencing learning. I am delighted to share that ReimaginED this year will feature a provocation from Professor Emeritus Michael Fullan. Provocations at the conference are short, compelling presentations from leading local and international thinkers that provide an invitation to explore powerful ideas and possibilities for the emerging futures for education. Michael is a renowned expert in the fields of education reform and systems change and will share his unique insight into the complexities of implementing change at all levels of the educational system. Michael is Professor Emeritus, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto, and Co-Director of New Pedagogies for Deep Learning. He is the former Dean of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education and Professor Emeritus of the University of Toronto, and Co-leader of the New Pedagogies for Deep Learning global initiative. Fullan served as Premier Dalton’s Special Policy Adviser in Ontario from 2003-2013. He received the Order of Canada (OC) in December 2012 and holds five honorary doctorates from universities around the world. His ‘interim autobiography’, Surreal Change, covers his pre-COVID period to 2018. Michael and his colleagues are now working diligently on field-based comprehensive system change in several countries. The goal of this work focuses on the ‘humanity paradigm’ — a deep care and commitment to all living things including equity and equality in the service of helping all humans cope and thrive in the complex societies of the 21st century. Michael Fullan’s latest books are: Spirit Work and the Science of Collaboration (with Mark Edwards, 2022), The Principal 2.0 (2023), and The Drivers (with Joanne Quinn, 2023). Young people throughout different cultures and circumstances are confronted with the complex challenges presented by the interconnected, interdependent systems in our world (e.g. climate change, human migration, terrorism, substance use, Covid-19, etc.). A recent report in the U.S. reported historically high rates of depression, anxiety and mental distress among teenagers with a call to action to invest in schools and communities to support wellbeing among youth. An essential question for the future of education is how do we help students to reflect on, deeply understand and respond mindfully and compassionately rather than just feeling overwhelmed by the complexity of these systems. With the growing interest in education in social and emotional learning (SEL) and mindfulness today, we feel it is especially timely to show how these can combine with skills in understanding systems and complexity to establish a cognitive and affective foundation for global citizenship. The Woodleigh Institute are delighted to be partnering with the Center for Systems Awareness, Woodleigh School, and Carey Baptist Grammar School to help address this challenge by bringing the Introduction to Compassionate Systems Framework back to Australia. This hands-on workshop will be led by Mette Miriam Rakel Böll and Peter Senge and offers a practice-based introduction to the tools and approaches. This framework incorporates learning tools in development for several decades from the fields of living systems dynamics, organisational learning, contemplative traditions, and social and emotional learning, and is now being used at both the level of classroom innovations and collective leadership in shaping a more generative school culture. We conceptualise compassion as an essentially systemic property of mind: to cultivate compassion is to be able to appreciate the systemic forces that influence people’s actions. It is the capacity to hold paradoxes – to see and sense the larger system with all its interdependence and interconnectedness and all the unintended consequences of human behavior – without judgment, but with real care for the system and everyone involved in it. The overall aim of the workshop is to advance leaders who foster collaboration for compassionate systemic change across organisational and hierarchical structures. Such leadership is a key dimension to support the profound changes needed for schools and education systems to become truly relevant for today’s students and for society at large. Transforming systems is, ultimately, about transforming relationships among the people and institutions that shape how those systems function. One of the exciting innovations for ReimaginED24 is the introduction of a new breakout session format - Mash Ups. Mash Ups connect speakers from the amazing ReimaginED community and provide them with the opportunity to share and artfully combine their interests in the co-design and delivery of an interactive workshop. The format showcases the innovative thinking and creativity of the participants in our conference community, and their willingness to explore new ideas, ways of thinking, and possibilities for collaboration. The Mash Up highlights for this year include a powerhouse collaboration between Mette Miriam Rakel Böll and Andrea Downie, and an inspired exploration of agency in the Middle Years from Ellen Moffatt, Cameron Paterson, and Alex Maunder. Regenerative Futures at Woodleigh School: Handcrafted ukulele's made from reclaimed timbers, student built boardwalks under construction in the wildlife reserve, soil laid on the roof of the Futures Studio to support planting and the creation of butterfly habitat, investigation and planning stages underway for student projects focused on solutions to complex, real-world challenges. The last month has seen incredible work unfold through the development of our Regenerative Futures Program, with inspiring student learning, innovative teaching, and an emerging, revolutionary learning precinct all on display. It was a pleasure to share insights into the program and Futures Studio with visiting teams from schools in Australia and SE Asia across the course of last week, including key learning from the wonderful New Metrics Project at the University of Melbourne. A special shout-out to Frank Burridge from McIldowie Partners Architects who joined one of the tours and our friends at The Alice Smith School who shared the aspirations for their own master plan during their visit. We look forward to welcoming more visitors into the Futures Studio space next year, as part of our commitment to outreach, community education, and a regenerative future.
