🟥Breaking news: The Climate Change Authority today advised the Federal Government that to hold warming to 1.5°C, it must commit to a climate target of at least 75% by 2035. 1.5°C is critical to protect people and nature from the worst impacts of climate damage, including our Reefs, koalas, forests and wildlife. In the CCA’s latest advice, the only pathway for Australia aligned with 1.5°C is at least 75% below 2005 levels by 2035 target and net zero by 2040. The advice says: “Australia can prosper in a world with lower emissions, and not only because it would deliver a more hospitable climate. With its plentiful solar and wind resources, Australia can generate large amounts of renewable energy relative to the size of its population. An abundance of clean energy and critical minerals, combined with a skilled, highly educated workforce, innovative companies and strong institutions, will give Australia advantages in the global low emissions economy.” The Albanese government is due to announce its 2035 climate target by February 2025. Australia is not on track for 1.5° C and a big lift in ambition is needed. WWF-Australia agrees with the CCA’s advice of a target of net zero by 2040 and welcomes a target of 75% by 2035 as a floor on ambition. But WWF-Australia is calling on the Federal government to commit to at least 90% below 2005 levels by 2035. That would put Australia on track to do our part to stabilise temperatures at 1.5° C, support our economy, and give our iconic wonders like the Great Barrier Reef a fighting chance. 🐢 Learn More: https://brnw.ch/21wMmB6 #ClimateChange #ConservationNews #ConservationUpdates #BreakingNews #GreatBarrierReef #News #StayInformed #Australia #WWFAus

Australia’s small but mighty bouncy animals need your help.🦘 Animals like the bandicoot, bettong and potoroo are now locally extinct in places they once called home. These little marsupials have shaped Australia's forests, providing homes and food for iconic wildlife. When digging for food, they turn over huge amounts of soil and bury seeds – which helps vegetation flourish. 🌿 Help bring back the bounce today. Your kindness will go towards critical conservation work to rewild and protect precious threatened species. 🚨 URGENT ACTION NEEDED: Australia's Wildlife is at a Tipping Point 🚨    Today, the government announced 20 new species will be added to the Threatened Species list, with some now critically endangered. While identifying these species is crucial, it's a glaring reminder that the crisis for Australia's wildlife is worsening.    The government's announcement highlights that our nature laws are failing to prevent species extinction. While it's great these new species will be given additional protections, our laws need to be fixed to ensure that species don't continue to decline. The funding is not new; it’s simply a repackaging of existing funds, with no new financial commitment made in the last budget.    Without serious investment, Australia will fail to meet both national and international commitments to prevent human-induced extinctions. We can’t afford to let that happen.    Add your voice now to urge our government to meaningfully invest in threatened species protection and stronger nature laws: https://lnkd.in/gKPW9dsT      Together, we can secure a future for our precious wildlife. #BreakingNews #NewsUpdates #Australia #Urgent #Threatenedspecies #EndangeredSpecies #Conservation #Nature #Wildlife #AussieWildlife

The Warru Rangers from APY Lands and the Nyikina Mangala Rangers in the Kimberley came together to share Traditional Knowledge and collaborate on conservation efforts for the endangered black-footed rock-wallaby (wiliji). This was an incredible opportunity for the two ranger groups to learn from each other, share their cultures and collaborate on conservation initiatives.💚 Check out the “In Photos” blog here: https://lnkd.in/g4raeF_V #conservation #nature #aussiewildlife #protectnature #knowledge

Vote for Marsupial of the Year 2024! 🥳 We’re excited to be supporting the iconic greater glider in the first Marsupial of the Year poll! https://lnkd.in/g6-ARkgc If the greater glider wins, it will help support WWF-Australia’s critical conservation work to protect this endangered species. Get clicking and vote for the greater glider now 🥇 Greater gliders were once common throughout the forests of Queensland, NSW and Victoria, but populations have crashed by as much as 80% in the last 20 years due to habitat destruction, as well as bushfires fuelled by a rapidly changing climate. They were uplisted as an Endangered species in 2022. WWF is working to protect and restore habitat for greater gliders. Together with our partners, we’ve installed hi-tech nest boxes which mimic the hollows of old trees and protect gliders from extreme temperatures. We’re also tracking them using GPS collars to see how they move through burnt and unburnt forests, and campaigning to protect one of the last strongholds for greater gliders in Tallaganda State Forest. Vote now! https://lnkd.in/g6-ARkgc Repost or tag your friends below! The more votes the better! 💪 Network 10 #TheProjectTv #MarsupialOfTheYear2024 #GreaterGlider #VoteNow #Wildlife #Nature #Conservation #WWFAustralia #AussieWildlife

Australian wildlife need our help! 🚨 Together, we need to call on our government to better invest in the protection of our wildlife. Here in Australia, we have such incredible species, found nowhere else in the world. But heartbreakingly, we’re also a global deforestation hotspot with the worst mammal extinction rate in the world. Australian nature laws are outdated and do not offer sufficient protection to our native wildlife. 💚 But, we do have good news! These laws are currently being reformed, which means the time to act is now. WWF has a clear plan on what needs to be done to reverse the extinction crisis and, including strengthening our nature laws and investing in the protection of threatened species. With your support, we can work together to ensure our Aussie wildlife thrive. https://lnkd.in/gg67r8Md Please repost to help us spread the word and encourage more Australians to join! #Conservation #Wildlife #Nature #ThreatenedSpecies #RegenerateNature #Rewilding #Australia #Biodiversity #WWFAustralia

Today, on the first day of Include a Charity week, we celebrate unsung heroes like WWF Legacy Society member, David Scheel. 🍃 David, a concert pianist, comedian, and actor, has shown how blending music and conservation can protect wildlife on the brink. From photographing illegal bird traps in Malta to advocating for the Californian condor, David’s journey highlights the power of the written word in conservation. His articles have led to significant changes, including the restoration of habitats and successful breeding programs. David’s current concerns include the impact of global warming on amphibians, the decline in pollinators like butterflies and bees, and the need for more habitats for the Critically Endangered Mountain pygmy possum. David’s dedication to conservation is inspiring. He has chosen to include a gift in his Will to WWF-Australia, ensuring his legacy of protecting nature continues. 💚 Read more in this inspiring blog post: https://lnkd.in/gsYRkk5G #Conservation #Blog #CharityWeek #LegacyToNature #LeaveAGift #Will #WWFAus

Mountain gorillas, a subspecies of the eastern gorilla, have made a remarkable recovery thanks to intensive conservation efforts. 🦍 From the brink of extinction, their population has grown to approximately 1,063 individuals, split between the Virunga Mountains and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Despite threats like habitat loss, poaching, and disease, ongoing initiatives such as anti-poaching patrols, habitat restoration, and community engagement continue to protect these endangered animals. The story of the mountain gorilla is a testament to the power of dedicated conservation work. Happy International Primate Day everyone!
